About this deal

Finally - production values. You will suffer significant eyestrain after 2.5 hours of glaring close-ups. All of the action is shot so close and is so muddled it is almost impossible to determine what is happening. The chariot display is shown either to close or too far away, and in both cases so fast that the impact of the glorious entrance and introduction of the tributes is lost. The CG shots (thankfully there are few of them) look like leftovers from a Syfy channel production. This may be the worst big-budget production to hit the big screen in years. Although Ross worked well with the actors, he did not handle the action epic elements well at all. The cinematography is atrocious and the whole production looks cheap. years before Katniss Everdeen volunteered as tribute, and decades before Coriolanus Snow became the tyrannical President of Panem, a young Coriolanus is the last hope for his failing lineage, the once-proud Snow family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With his livelihood threatened, Snow is reluctantly assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, a tribute from the impoverished District 12. But after Lucy Gray’s charm captivates the audience of Panem, Snow sees an opportunity to shift their fates. With everything he has worked for hanging in the balance, Snow unites with Lucy Gray to turn the odds in their favor. Battling his instincts for both good and evil, Snow sets out on a race against time to survive and reveal if he will ultimately become a songbird or a snake.

The Hunger Games is the first in a trilogy of books published by Scholastic that has already become a literary phenomenon with over 36.5 million copies in circulation. Set in the future, one male and one female from each of the twelve districts of the nation is forced to participate in the annual competition called The Hunger Games, which is broadcast live throughout the country for the entertainment of the Capitol’s wealthy residents. Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) volunteers in her younger sister’s place to enter the games, and is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy when she’s pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love. Divergent is one of the latest Young Adult adaptations to hit theaters. These films usually fall under one of two sub-genres: Dystopian Future and Fantasy Romance. (There are also a growing number of Dying Girl movies, like The Fault in Our Stars and If I Stay.) This film is part of the Dystopian Future genre and will inevitably be compared to Hunger Games. How is it compared that franchise? Does it work on its own? For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.Katniss considers her 4-year-younger sister Prim and her mother, both of whom have relied on Katniss for survival since her father perished in a mine explosion when she was 11. As the couple’s CG train zips between districts, we see how Snow’s stormtroopers clamp down on what little freedom remains, offset by the empty frivolity of life in the capital — a nonstop binge-and-purge banquet where wild hairstyles and lavish costume changes provide a distraction from an idle existence. Get started Close The movie begins with Katniss and Peeta on their victory tour, during which they are allowed to not only see how the other 11 districts live but also to see the first symptoms of rebellion across the country. Having already resisted the capital, the pair represents hope to all those who feel oppressed, just as their narrative inspires real-world auds to feel the same way.

Letters from the Rose Garden" featurette - insights from Donald Sutherland on the development of his role as President Snow The Hunger Games begins in District 12 on the day of the reaping. The story’s 16-year-old narrator, Katniss Everdeen, goes off to meet her buddy Gale so they may go hunting and collecting before the reaping that afternoon. For Katniss, this entails avoiding archery. Her bow and arrow skills are unsurpassed after many years of hunting wildlife in the woods. During her private session with the Gamemakers, they award her an 11 out of 12 for her abilities and tenacity. The heart of the story is intact, unfortunately there are many significant elements from the novel entirely missing, or changed to the point they lose the depth of meaning they were intended to have. Unlike some of the sub-plot and story elements left out of the Potter and LOTR series, these missing and adulterated items matter greatly, and lessen the quality of the movie. I will give the producers credit for building Seneca Crane's role in an effective way that answers many questions for those that have not read the books. The highlight of the opening ceremonies is their arrival. The tributes begin their training after the festivities. According to Katniss and Peeta’s request, Haymitch tutors them together and tells them to keep their greatest abilities hidden from the other tributes.

How does the movie compare to the book? What are the main differences? Is it different to see violence rather than to read about it?We learn about Katniss’ life in the impoverished area of her district, the Seam, and her family as she makes her journey from her house to the Meadow and, eventually, to the woods, where people from the district are forbidden to go. First of all, kudos to the actors - each does a marvelous job with their roles. Harrelson, Lawrence, Hutchinson, Tucci, Banks and the rest of the cast - they all nail their characters and do them honor.

Did we miss something on diversity?

There's only one wide release this week, In the Heart of the Sea, although some sources still have Legend expanding nationwide. Of course, expanding nationwide doesn't mean the same thing as expanding truly wide. Because In the Heart of the Sea doesn't have any real competition this weekend, it is widely expected to earn first place, but it isn't expected to be a smash hit. It is very unlikely it will do as well as last year's number one film, Exodus: Gods and Kings. The depth is a little better this year, but 2015 will still likely struggle to match 2014 in the year-over-year comparison. Katniss gets to experience luxury like she’s never experienced before on the train, and she gets to eat the richest, most sumptuous meals imaginable. Drinking/drugs/smoking:2/5, One character, who is haunted by his violent past is addicted to alcohol, but there is nothing else. To start, this movie is one of the best I have ever seen. I LOVE the books, and this is probably one of the best book to movie adaptations I've seen in a long time. But before you go letting your 9 year old watch it, let's go over the story, as well as the pros and cons.
