About this deal

It has an old chip near the base, some discolouring to the glaze especially around the rim and on the handle, the glaze seems to be worn away and it has crazing inside. I think all the flaws give it character. can anyone tell me the significance of coloured beer glasses ,as ive a light blue dimpled (more like scales) half pint with GR 64 verification mark & 15 impressed on base Loved reading the articles on beer glasses. I found a GR 64 among my glasses 10 sided so looked it up. It is in good condition but has a very uneven base so it tilts towards the handle. I’ve got about ten or a dozen 10 sided glasses, both pint and half, that I’ve collected over the years. One has RAF on it, one has GR 301 with C beneath it, one has GR 64, a half pint one has GR 323 and ccc beneath it. I’ve also got a tall pint glass which is smooth on the top half and ribbed on the bottom. The sides slope in towards the bottom. It has 16 ribs. It’s got GR 478 on it. The Pilsner beer glass has a tall, slender shape to emphasise the colour and carbonation of the beer, with a broad top to help maintain the beer's head. A similar style to the Pilsner glass is the Weizen beer glass, specially designed to complement wheat beer.

Hi Paul I’ve uploaded some pictures of the glass (there should be 5 altogether), hope you can view them, please let me know. It’s “GCC”, for Gateshead County Council, Gateshead’s local authority being a county borough from 1889 to 1974 Hi, thanks for the fascinating article. I’ve come via http://abeerglasscollector.com/ in a bid to find some info on a charity shop find I got today. I can tell you it’s a 10 sided ‘lantern’ glass (new to me; born in the 70s) with GR and the crown, and from the ‘323’ stamp it was verified in Gateshead. What I can’t seem to find is the meaning of the 3 letters beneath the 323? They’re either GCC or CCC, it’s hard to tell from the etching. The whole is enclosed in an oval split in 4, with PINT above and a U or partial D below. Any ideas? I’m fascinated now!Tulip glasses are more modern, having a taller shape, and usually flaring out towards the top; these designs are more commonly associated with continental lagers or promotional campaigns by breweries, and are frequently etched or marked with the beer's label.

I absolutely love such localized, and specialized explorations of history! Bravo, sir! Keep up the good work! You may choose to restrict the collection or use of your personal information in the following ways:

Beer Glass Types

The traditional handled tankard is still popular today and comes in many different forms. The classic British dimpled mug is a firm favourite among beer clinkers due to their sturdy design. Beer mugs are made from a variety of materials, including glass tankards, pewter tankards and ceramic tankards. Popular at beer festivals such as Oktoberfest, the German beer stein or seidel often holds a larger volume of beer and may feature a lid which was traditionally used to keep bugs out. I have VR 1/2 Pint pewter mug with Albion Hotel and a name etched/scratched on the base. The number under the Crown and VR is 483 Does the 483 give an indication as to its origin? I have quite a collection of mainly glass mugs and glasses with various numbers, some have obvious clues like London CC and West Ham on them. The Royal Cyphers of George V, and George VI both used St. Edward’s Crown. However it is depicted slightly differently for both Kings on letter boxes (for example) I think this is true for the crown used in weights and measures marks that were sandblasted onto pub glassware. So, just by looking at the crown on a piece of pub glassware you might be able to tell whether you are looking at a George V or George VI piece. is there a better/established name for these, to distinguish from dimple/thumbprint mugs which I think must have come later? Happy to provide photos. Are silver tankards not the oldest beer mugs ?? My wife has a collection of frog beer mugs – they are rather fun when the last drop of the mug lands on your nose!Ron Pattinson makes the point that the price of beer remained constant from 1870 to 1914.That’s because there wasn’t a coin small enough to reflect duty and commodity price changes.Brewers dealt with this by weakening or strengthening the beer. Gravity always dropped during a war for example. Compound that with the fact that glass manufacturers make almost identical glasses in 14 oz. and 12 oz. sizes, and that is the real crime in the US bars. (Except for the fact that there’s no standard beer glass in the US, and most local regulatory gov’t agencies don’t seem to be bothered by the short servings or mis-use of the “pint” term). The form is identical to the biscuit-cream, but the color is baby blue. It is stamped VR 19. Is there a source for finding the location and maker of this mark. I appreciate any information you can provide. We know it can be overwhelming to choose from our vast selection of glasses, but fear not! Once you figure out what kind of liquid courage you’re after, it becomes a lot less scary. Are you a beer lover? Wine connoisseur? Whiskey enthusiast? Or maybe you’re more of a soda sipper. Whatever your drink of choice, we’ve got a glass for that! As an American, my first introduction to English pubs, beer and glasses was in the early 60’s, while I was still a teenager, in the comic strip Andy Capp. Andy always drank dark ale, no doubt mild since he was a northerner, from wide mouthed cylindrical glasses. It seemed exotic compared to yellow American beer, and probably contributed to a lifelong fascination with British ale and to my brewing of it.
