About this deal

A drunken priest named Ashberry joins them as God's servant in their upcoming battle against Midian.

It's a bit amazing that Nightbreed even managed to earn a cult following though, as its original theatrical cut was heavily compromised, with distributor 20th Century Fox cutting nearly an hour of material out of the film without Barker's consent, with the cut footage thought to be lost.

Despite the increased length, the pacing is better and the accelerated storytelling helps cover some of the weaker plotting, especially anything concerning character motivations, though seemingly, without reshoot time and access to everything Barker originally shot, there are still substantial holes in the narrative. An extended 159-minute cut version, from another VHS found in July 2009, premiered on March 27, 2010, as part of the HorrorHound Weekend in Indianapolis. The site's consensus states: " Nightbreed's imaginative world-building and startling creature designs are no match for its clumsy, uneven plotting". Film enthusiasts can’t resist a good “artist screwed over by studio hacks” story and Nightbreed’s history has turned the concept of a director’s cut into the Holy Grail of its kind. Theatrical Cut: This is the theatrical release, reshot and edited in a way that skewed it toward a slasher film, which was not Clive Barker’s intention.

Nightbreed was the first of a planned three-picture deal Barker had with Morgan Creek, Joe Roth's production company, that included an adaptation of Son of Celluloid and a sequel to Nightbreed. It stars Craig Sheffer, Anne Bobby, David Cronenberg, Charles Haid, Hugh Quarshie, and Doug Bradley. The song "Country Skin" is a country-and-western rendition of the Oingo Boingo song "Skin" (which appears on the 1990 album Dark at the End of the Tunnel), it was written by Elfman and performed by country singer Michael Stanton. Really looking forward to the tv series to make me appreciate the movie even more than I do already. The quality that freaked out the studio, Barker's ambition, is precisely what makes Nightbreed so impressive". In the following year, Morgan Creek announced the sale of the domestic rights to its library of 78 films, but the production company plans to retain the TV rights to Nightbreed. Barker's original version ran two-and-a-half hours and Fox asked for almost an hour to be cut prompting editor Richard Marden to leave the project in protest.

Following the somewhat surprising international success of Hellraiser in 1987, Clive Barker was the toast of the town and the horror world was his cinematic oyster. For the first time on home video, you can experience Clive Barker's original director's cut of Nightbreed with over 40 minutes of new footage, all mastered in high definition from the original camera negative! A long-term member of the Screen Rant family, Michael looks forward to continuing on creating new content for the site for many more years to come.

The Special Edition contained 1 blu-ray of the Director’s Cut, 1 Blu-Ray of the Theatrical Cut (never before released in High Definition) and a bonus disc of extra scenes and featurettes.

The patchwork assembly magnifies issues with persistent energy levels and consistently dynamic imagery throughout the film. Luckily, word of the troubled production escaped into the pre-internet fan-o-sphere (mostly Fangoria and Gorezone magazines) and helped build a solid cult fanbase. The climax of the film culminates in an assault on the Nightbreed's home base of Midian as the 'normies' would rather kill all of them as opposed to understand them. The studio did not understand it, it had no movie stars, it was violent, [38] and it had elements of fantasy and horror which they saw as a weakness while Barker saw it as a strength. It’s charming enough to not be boring, but does not live up to the revolting hyper-theatricality of Hellraiser . I finally watched the Director's Cut and it's still a messy film but damn it's still such a fun movie.
