About this deal

Chizumi later harasses and scares Ogawara, but Ogawara and the unnamed neighbor are still concerned for and sympathetic to her. We don't know how much the Devil is involved but he does orchestrate the massacre at the end of the story. Despite its title, Dissolving Classroom departs the school setting by the end of the first of five interlocking stories to explore a nightmare landscape of devil worship, dissolving bodies, brain-slurping sisters, public apology, and the quotidian dangers of human interaction.

She goes to hospital where the doctors do their best to save her, but her parents have died and Keiko will die soon too. It turns out, for his sister, Chizumi who apparently is a demon possessed by a snake, devoted to devil worship. Keiko is one of the main characters for the first chapter and appears again later in the last chapter as someone important to the investigation on Yuuma and Chizumi. Villain Protagonist: Yuuma kills almost everyone that he speaks with and Chizumi eats their melted remains. Dissolving Classroom is told through a series of connected short stories that follow Yuuma and Chizumi Azawa. His back catalogue of work features some of the strongest entries in the horror manga genre you’ll see from Uzumaki and Gyo to the aforementioned domestic horror comedy Junji Ito’s Cat Diary. Kick the Dog: The Devil makes sure that Keiko is there to watch while Yuuma does a public apology on national television.

It's almost as if you might imagine any bored kid in the back row, fantasizing the destruction of the school. While I don’t want to give too much away, the ending felt very rushed, as if Ito was forced to bring an end to the work before he was ready to. Ambiguous Innocence: Chizumi asserts that Yuuma is addicted to apologizing to other people due to it bringing him closer to the devil. Eventually Chizumi reveals that Yuuma drags their parents' souls back from hell and reanimates their bodies, but they inevitably melt again. The work contains 5 main chapters as well as two unrelated bonus short stories and a brief comedic afterword.

This isn't top-shelf Junji Ito, but it is pretty undistilled, nevertheless, and we will take what we can get. Facial Horror: The inevitable fate of girls who hear Yuuma praise their beauty long enough is to have their faces distort in monstrously ugly ways. Nonstandard Character Design: While everyone is relatively normal-looking (until they become disfigured by Yuuma, of course), Chizumi resembles a gremlin. The neighbors are repeatedly bothered by the noise from the Azawa's apartment, and Ogawara and the unnamed neighbor keep trying to help Chizumi and Yuuma.

After being pulled partially out of the ground, they are then rapidly dragged back into the holes until they disappear entirely, and the children are never found again. Whereas Junji Ito’s Cat Diary was Ito going slightly out of his usual remit, Junji Ito’s Dissolving Classroom is very much in his established playbox and that’s definitely a great thing. They are also some of the first to show symptoms of their brains melting in the first chapter and die as a result.

Like I said it just felt more like the art came first and the author rushed to throw a story into it.But in Dissolving Classroom the devil (goofily Baphomet-styled) is disappointingly named again and again as the source of horror, robbing its power to inscribe the terrifying wonder that enlivens Ito’s best work. Uncanny Valley Makeup: In the fourth chapter, Chizumi wears entirely too much when Tomohito is kidnapped for her.
