This Hoover model has been designed with a low-profile cleaner head, making it easy to get under furniture. Freedom cleans your floors beautifully thanks to its rotating brush bar, but it can also be used as a handheld vacuum in your car, on your stairs or on just about any other surface in the home. If you have the wrist strength and energy to manoeuvre the Hoover Freedom, it’s actually quite handy for stairs. Hoover is the latest brand to join the pistol-grip cordless vacuum cleaner revolution with the affordable Freedom FD22G. There's no need to tire your fingers by constantly pressing the trigger, as freedom has a switch to activate the continuous power mode.

The brush tool was a real favourite, being large enough to clean a good-sized area and with bristles soft enough for a variety of tasks.

The latter will take a little DIY to install, but holds the cleaner with extension tube and floor-head attached, plus a tool each side. Suction appears to be a little better than the SlimVac, but when spread across the larger floor-head it’s still rather asthmatic. Use as a handheld for cleaning inside your car or for upholstery, or vacuum throughout your home with high reach cleaning. But her small grip and fingers did make it easier to get to the switch when she held the cleaner in the left.

Both are a decent size, and with the airflow condensed into a smaller area, both provide reasonable suction. It has the same lock-on trigger that’s all but inaccessible, depending on the hand in which you’re holding the cleaner. Getting those high cobwebs with the extension tube and tool attached is definitely a two-handed operation. It impressed us with great performance, but considering cordless vacuums are not designed to be your main vacuum, we think it's very expensive. It has a 25 minute run time so it’s great whether you’re tidying a little mess or cleaning the whole house. Being disabled I need something light and easy to use, this ticks all the boxes and I'll never go back to anything else. The action of agitating the tool against the carpet shifts a fair bit of debris – but again, you need some arm strength to do it. The rotating brush bar works wonders on your carpets, whilst the removable handheld helps you to clean tricky spots such as inside the car. The main body offers up the same angular design of the Vax, so it’s no surprise to discover it’s seriously uncomfortable in the hand.The floor-head has more bite and pulls dust and debris from the carpet better, although our carpet test still showed it wasn’t great. A continuous power mode provides an extra boost for larger vacuuming tasks with no risk of aching fingers from holding the trigger.

Powered by lithium-ion batteries, Freedom delivers up to 25 minutes of suction power without fading: plenty of time to clean a typical sized home from top to bottom. Freedom is supplied with a wall mount, charger, crevice tool and 2-in-1 dusting brush / upholstery nozzle to help with all your cleaning needs. Using the cleaner above floor level, the angular design causes various edges of plastic to dig into your hand.

This cordless, bagless vacuum frees you from the hassle of stepping over cables, winding them back in and getting tangled around your furniture. This is a good few minutes shy of the similar Vax SlimVac or, indeed, Hoover’s own claimed run-time. With the floor-head attached directly to the body, it is possible to leap up the stairs gazelle-like without fear of coming a cropper on a trailing cable.
