When the synopsis said that there was a paranormal twist to this story I was intrigued and when I read it I wasn't disappointed. I don't usually read full on paranormal books but this was a really good balance for me. It blended the paranormal with the normal well and the blending of the two worked well. Before I get to some of my concerns and some ideas for how we can improve secret sister programs, let’s start by looking at what is a secret sister program and what’s its purpose. What is a secret sister program? What if everything about you changed in an instant...your looks, your voice, the feel of your hair and the smell of your skin... How does this activity point women to God and the Word? Maybe your group encourages women to pray for one another, to share scripture, and to give gifts that are spiritual in nature. That’s good if that happens, but is there a better way?

The duo recorded their second album in December 2012 and January 2013 at the Village Recording Studios, Los Angeles, with T Bone Burnett as producer. Ella Matthews has it all. A beautiful house, a charming husband and a precious baby daughter – her life has pretty much turned out exactly as she planned. The Secret Sister is my first book by the author duo K. A. Clarke and A. J. Brittany, although I have read some of Amanda Brittany's previous independent work, namely Traces of Her.

[1] History [ edit ] Beginnings [ edit ] Generally speaking, secret sister programs invite women to secretly encourage another woman in their church. Usually, one person assigns the sisters and keeps the list a secret for the duration of the program. Typically, these programs are scheduled for a year, sometimes less, with a celebration and reveal party at the end of the program. Women may send cards, pray for their secret sisters, and often give them small gifts. Many churches ask women to fill out a form about their favorite things so they can be surprised with things they’ll enjoy. The purpose given is often building relationships and community.

EVENTS & ENTERTAINING

Secret Sister is one of those books in which my logical and emotional halves are battling to have their say regarding this book. My logical side is saying the book was a well written story about love, loss, grief, and how our relationships with others affect who we are. It infused a twist on the amnesiac accident survivor story and used it as a catalyst to explore the details mentioned earlier. However, with all the good points this book had, my emotional side isn’t as quite taken with the book as I should be. I wasn’t as engrossed in the book as I have been with others. I did like the book, but that opinion is based mostly on the technical aspects of the book instead of it coming from my heart, full of feeling. I don’t usually read paranormal books, but the write up on this one said it had a “twist of the paranormal” and that intrigued me. This certainly wasn’t what I expected! It was the most emotional book I have read in a VERY long time! I couldn’t put it down. This story will tear your heart out, have you question why things happen the way they do and will make you stop and appreciate the people around you... because everything can change in a heartbeat! There is some romance here, and even some sexy times. Don't get too excited, though. The true romance is the friendship between Roxanne and Cathy, and the sexy times are not wildly explicit. Some secret sister programs have variety from month to month with the ability for women to sign up to participate or choose to not participate for that month. For instance, the following calendar schedule gives enough different, but affordable ideas that may be similar, but not identical. Some monthly themes could also follow the holiday of that month. How is God glorified? Secret sister programs can easily become about the gifts. Women compare what they have and haven’t gotten with others in the program. We have to ask, what are we pointing women to?

There’s no on-ramp for new women. Whether the program lasts 6 months or a year, women who may want to join in can’t and they end up feeling excluded. Instead of unity, you’ve created a clique. I really didn't follow whether or not Colleen had fabricated her situation with Jake or not. The ending of the book confused me with how easily he let her go. I really believe that Colleen was suffering from PTSD and some other form of mental illness and misinterpreting her relationship with her husband and that she was the actual problem, not him. This was really not made clear in the ending. It’s not a bad idea, but there are many better ideas that would reach a larger group of women in your church and community.

Stay the Course

Our love doesn’t win souls or save souls, only Christ’s love does. We miss the mark when we make it about us. Secret sister programs usually only include women in the church. It’s inward-focused, not outward-focused. Emelle lives in suburban Washington D.C. with her husband, Phil, her hero of thirty years, and two orange cats, Lucy and Bella. Her daughter, Olivia, and son, Allen, are happily launched on their own and contributing great things to society, which has always been their mother’s fondest wish.
