What a beautiful container. The blue porcelain flagon stands out on my whisky shelf. The Chivas Royal Salute 21 yo whisky is produced by Chivas Brothers. Chivas Brothers trace its roots to the opening of a grocery store in Aberdeen in 1801. The grocery store took the name Chivas Brothers from the 17th century House of Schivas, a large house in the town of the Schivas in Aberdeenshire. Chivas Regal’s Royal Salute is considered one of the finest Scotch whiskies by those in the know and was created in 1953 to honor the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. This expression is a momentous tribute to both the British Monarchy and Royal Salute’s unique origin story. I wanted to mark this memorable occasion with a blend that was as iconic and special as the original Royal Salute 21 Year Old Signature Blend that was created in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Crafting this blend has been the perfect occasion to reflect on the innovative approach we’ve taken to blending whisky for the past 70 years, and a moment to look forward to what can be achieved in years to come.”At her coronation, the crown of Queen Elizabeth II was set in rubies, sapphires and emeralds. It takes its name from the traditional 21-gun salute and fittingly, Royal Salute whiskey are aged for a minimum of 21 years. A fruity, smokey and floral nose greets the drinker, before notes of chocolate, dried fruits, caramel and toasted oak wash over the palate. The Royal Salute’s finish contains subtle notes of white raisin and cherry blossoms floating on a long and luxurious finish.
