And there are boatloads of red herrings. Every time I’d figured it out and thought—Oh, come on, get on with it already—she’d toss us another little one to send us on another trail. Sorry, Alice, dear. It would appear I don’t know my own stealth. I was hoping we might have a little chat.’ It was electric, a spark of cosmic recognition, as if in that moment time’s weave had opened and they’d glimpsed an alternative existence in which they were something more than strangers on a train.” But of course one does not need to have commited murder to write about it. One simply requires an aquaintance with man's dark depths, and the inclination to explore them to their very end. Besides, haven't we all experienced the desire to kill, if only for a moment? "

Would these two women be able to find information about the disappearance 70 years ago of 11-month old Theo - if they worked together on this cold case even though the police had not been able to find one clue or to find Theo? But where was he? Alice felt her stomach swoop, thrill to despair in an instant. Her hands pressed warm against the glass as her gaze swept the scene below: cream and pink roses, petals shining as if they’d been buffed; precious peaches clinging to the sheltered garden wall; the long silver lake gleaming in the mid-morning light. The whole estate had already been preened and primped to a state of impossible perfection, and yet there was still bustle everywhere. This novel will hold great appeal for bibliophiles. The author’s love and respect for books, reading, and libraries is evident throughout her eloquent prose. I read her novel “The Forgotten Garden” a few years ago and it remains one of my favorites. As if to lay claim to the impressive clumps, a small bird launched itself from behind the broken glass, diving in a direct line before correcting to swoop fast and close by Sadie’s ear. She flinched but stood her ground. They were everywhere, those little birds she’d glimpsed from the lake, darting in and out of the creeper’s dark spaces and calling to one another in urgent chirrups. Not just birds, either; the foliage teemed with insects of all descriptions – butterflies, bees and others she couldn’t name – giving the building an appearance of constant animation at odds with its dilapidated state. She reached the place she’d chosen. The bag, with its box inside, was surprisingly heavy and it was a relief to put it down. On hands and knees, she pulled away the camouflage of ferns and branches. The smell of sodden soil was overwhelming, of wood mouse and mushrooms, of other moldering things. Her father had told her once that generations had walked these woods and been buried deep beneath the heavy earth. It made him glad, she knew, to think of it that way. He found comfort in the continuity of nature, believing that the stability of the long past had the power to alleviate present troubles. And maybe in some cases it had, but not this time, not these troubles.Fast forward to London in 2003, where Alice Edevane, Theo’s sister, now an acclaimed mystery writer remembers that long ago night, Deborah, the eldest daughter, beautiful like her mother, charming and clever as well. Married well and had one daughter. Kate may be imagining Alex at the end. It is at least more feasible than the other, straightforward suggestion. Movies like ‘ The Butterfly Effect‘ and ‘ Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind‘ tell us that there is nothing straightforward about time warp movies, and this one is no different. Kate may be dreaming in the final moments and even for most of the story. Towards the end of the story, Kate attempts to escape the illusion when she tells Alex how she thought him up. You may remember how after grabbing food with her mother at Daley Plaza, Kate experienced a nasty accident. An abandoned house in enchanting Cornwall coupled with a seventy year old cold case of a missing child. Interest piqued? Mine certainly was. Add to that the author is Kate Morton and I knew I was in for a treat. I wasn’t disappointed. The interaction with present time police detective Sadie as she stumbles onto the crumbling estate while staying with her grandfather. Endeavors into the past of the house and the discovery of an unsolved disappearance of a baby more than seventy years ago will captivate the mystery reader. The home belonged to Evelyn and Anthony, but after the disappearance of their baby Theo, they closed up the house moved to London never to return.

Alice tells her story from when she's young and things that happened at that time, she also tells her story in the present tense. I LOVED exploring the estate and finding the clues of the case with Sadie and finding things that were left by the family. I would have loved to live on the estate as well as to be a part of the investigating. Handley, John (April 3, 2005). "Aurora stars as movie location". Chicago Tribune. However, as the protagonists inhabit different timelines (which may as well indicate their respective states of mind — while Alex lives in the past of his memories, Kate lives in the future of her aspirations), the present seems challenging to grasp. In other words, Kate’s past is Alex’s future, as it is a timeless present for the audience. Curiously, in the end, it is Kate who seems to be living in the past, holding on to the memories of Alex.
