With its huge size and long, curved tusks (which both males and females possess), the walrus is a highly distinctive inhabitant of the Arctic. In fact, the word pinniped means "fin-footed" in Latin. Those fin-shaped feet make them supreme swimmers, and all pinnipeds are considered semi-aquatic marine mammals. Male and female spotted seals remain together for the breeding season. The female gives birth to one pup each year. Ringed seals rest, breed, molt and hunt from the arctic sea ice. The species is rarely found on land. During the spring, females excavate small caves on the ice in which they give birth. Humans have hunted seals since the Stone Age.
