About this deal

With its huge size and long, curved tusks (which both males and females possess), the walrus is a highly distinctive inhabitant of the Arctic. It is a highly-social species, often gathering in groups that may contain tens of thousands of individuals. Campagna, C.; Le Boeuf, B. J.; Cappozzo, J. H. (1988). "Pup abduction and infanticide in southern sea lions". Behaviour. 107 (1–2): 44–60. doi: 10.1163/156853988X00188. JSTOR 4534718. Johnson, William M.; Lavigne, David M. (1999). In Renouf, D. (ed.). Behaviour of Pinnipeds. Chapman and Hall. p.373. ISBN 978-0-412-30540-5. While there are many differences among the species, all seals have feet shaped like fins. In fact, the word pinniped means "fin-footed" in Latin. Those fin-shaped feet make them supreme swimmers, and all pinnipeds are considered semi-aquatic marine mammals. This means they must spend some part of their lives on land or sea ice, usually during the mating and birthing seasons.

"The Real Navy Seals – and Sea Lions and Dolphins and Whales". ABC News . Retrieved 30 July 2013. Ribbon seals are known to be tolerant of people and boats. This suggests that the species experiences less predation than other seal species. Species that are known to predate ribbon seals include great white sharks and killer whales. When traveling long distances, sea lions are known to employ a swimming technique called porpoising. As the sea lion dashes across the sea surface it breaches the surface in a series of consecutive leaps. This technique is likely used to increase their speed, since air resistance is significantly less than the drag of water. Seals, too, have key adaptations that make them efficient swimmers, like lots of blubber to make them buoyant. When at sea, northern elephant seals spend 85 to 95 percent of that time underwater and make massive migrations up to 13,000 miles long.Forcada, Jaume; Trathan, P. N.; Reid, K.; Murphy, E. J. (2005). "The Effects of Global Climate Variability in Pup Production of Antarctic Fur Seals". Ecology. 86 (9): 2408–2417. doi: 10.1890/04-1153. ISSN 0012-9658. JSTOR 3451030. For species living in the extreme cold, fur adds an additional layer of warmth. Fur seals rely on two layers of fur, an outer protective layer and an underfur that traps air bubbles and insulates the skin—the seals have roughly 300,000 underfur hairs per square inch. Baby harp seals have an extra defense to keep warm—their snow-white fur helps absorb heat from the sun. Gisiner, R.; Schusterman, R. J. (1992). Male and female spotted seals remain together for the breeding season. The female gives birth to one pup each year. Ringed seals rest, breed, molt and hunt from the arctic sea ice. The species is rarely found on land. During the spring, females excavate small caves on the ice in which they give birth. Humans have hunted seals since the Stone Age. Originally, seals were hit with clubs during haul-out. Eventually, seal hunters used harpoons to spear the animals from boats out at sea, and hooks for killing pups on ice or land. They were also trapped in nets. The use of firearms in seal hunting during the modern era drastically increased the number of killings. Pinnipeds are typically hunted for their meat and blubber. The skins of fur seals and phocids are made into coats, and the tusks of walruses continue to be used for carvings or as ornaments. [170] There is a distinction between the subsistence hunting of seals by indigenous peoples of the Arctic and commercial hunting: subsistence hunters typically use seal products for themselves and depend on them for survival. [171] National and international authorities have given special treatment to aboriginal hunters since their methods of killing are seen as less destructive and wasteful. This distinction is being questioned as indigenous people are using more modern weaponry and mechanized transport to hunt with, and are selling seal products in the marketplace. Some anthropologists argue that the term "subsistence" should also apply to these cash-based exchanges as long as they take place within local production and consumption. More than 100,000phocids (especially ringed seals) as well as around 10,000walruses are harvested annually by native hunters. Nearly all seal species are reliant on marine habitats, though some will enter estuaries and rivers in search of food. An outlier is the Baikal seal, which spends its whole life in Lake Baikal, a freshwater lake in Siberia.

Digital transformation Driving change through innovation and investment in new technologies PolarSeal is proud to be leading the way in the innovation of technologies with With so much time spent in water, some species like the elephant seals have evolved the ability to hold their breath for up to two hours and dive to depths of more than 6,500 feet looking for food. ( Read more about how diving animals can stay underwater for so long.) Laidre, K. L.; Stirling, I.; Lowry, L. F.; Wiig, Ø.; Heide-Jørgensen, M. P.; Ferguson, S.H. (2008). Once bonding has occurred, the female prepares to mate again. She enters estrus, or heat, a reproductive state that advertises to the males that she is fertile. Females will mate with at least one of the males. Once the egg is fertilized it stops growing and remains in a dormant state for three months. Part of the reason for this delay is that pinnipeds must give birth on land but fetuses take nine months to develop. The delay allows for birthing to align with the annual trip ashore. Although both are present in sub-Arctic regions, neither is a true Arctic seal.
