Spin art is an art form that uses paint, a canvas such as glossy cardboard and a spinning platform. It is primarily used to entertain and expose children to the process of art creation, although it can be enjoyed by people of all ages. If you prefer not to solder the connections, you may instead use 22 gauge wire connectors. You will need three connectors per student. But we can compare it to a salad spinner! The kids have been obsessed with this spin painter! They pretty much haven’t stopped making spin art since it arrived on our doorstep. They especially loved watching the entire spin painting process through the transparent lid.
Today we will learn how to build a mini electric spin art machine and then use it to make colorful art! In fact when our classes were in session last year before the pandemic we challenged our afterschool students to make these and then we set them up for a school wide event! Even though we definitely had some ups and downs (hobby motors aren’t really supposed to last hours on end) it was a fun way to showcase our students’ work and to have a fun art based activity for kids to try. The first step is to gather all of the tools needed to build your spin art machine. The most important tool is the rotating surface itself, which I found at an office supply store. These are typically used by teachers to allow students in multiple classrooms to access and write on a single piece of paper without damaging the original document. A good model for this project would be the “Teachers’ Rotating Document Holder” sold by Staples, but any similar product should work well enough. The diameter of my surface was approximately 17 inches across, but different-sized surfaces will obviously produce different results.
