About this deal

I was left with such an unusual feeling that I didn't at first realise what it was, and then I remembered: optimism.

I don’t mean to be rude towards people who have done them, but they tend to be quite backwards-looking don't they? Finally we may note that, in common with so many Labour MPs, Miliband clearly has only a very blinkered view of the labour movement and its potential power, and how the ruling class has sought to shackle us. A rare beacon of positivity in these challenging times, Ed Miliband’s Reasons to be Cheerful podcast highlights ingenious methods employed across the world to bring about change for the better, and in Go Big he expands on these schemes and encourages readers to aim high in their ideals. They also miss a fundamental shift in the economy, where it is clear that the size and role of the state will grow. For the past four years, Ed Miliband has been discovering and interviewing brilliant people all around the world who are successfully tackling the biggest problems we face, transforming communities and pioneering global movements. This is a used book - there is no escaping the fact it has been read by someone else and it will show signs of wear and previous use. Bleak House by Dickens was another one: it has a reputation as hard work but I flew through it as a kid.

This book is really an eye opener and offers some really constructive ideas on how we can Go Big and bring about change. It rather begs the question of who shares in the blame for this, if not the Labour government of Gordon Brown, in which Ed Miliband was a minister, which overhauled the benefits system to include the hated Work Capability Assessment, notorious for causing benefit claimants to starve to death. It details the challenges he has faced, the difficulties - and the colleagues - he has had to deal with, some of the mistakes he has made, and the successes he has occasionally enjoyed along the way. As a sporadic listener to the podcast Reasons to be Cheerful, I'd been meaning to get this book since its release. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the UK politics, especially now as we are in dire need of knowing that things can get better in the dumpster fire that is UK politics right now.Go Big’s origins lie in Miliband’s podcast series, a post-2015 challenge that’s allowed academics and activists, campaigners, and politicians of all stripes to share their insights on all manner of subjects with the wider public. We would also like to use cookies (including from third-party providers like Google) to monitor site traffic so we can understand our audiences and provide personalised advertising for Book Festival events you may be interested in. Elsewhere Miliband promotes “Citizens’ Assemblies”, that latest fad so beloved of reformers after having played a role in progressive constitutional changes in Ireland and elsewhere.
