Some people may claim that its brash approach does Islay a disservice. However, I would argue that it succeeds in capturing its essence in a single bottle. Actually, it’s a great introduction to the spirit of what the island offers.

Overall, Big Peat offers a salty primary taste with a zesty citrus tartness throughout the opening. This is combined with a succulent and oily mouthfeel and a bracing eucalyptic effect. In 2017, Douglas Laing produced another Big Peat Fèis Ìle featuring the faces of more than 300 of Big Peat’s ‘pals’, who were asked to submit photos imitating the ‘handsome’ protagonist online over a two-week period. The whisky was again bottled at 48%, with a bottle run of 500. Based on the rest of the line, I had low expectations going into the Big Peat Whisky but they were happily surpassed. After a few sips, I found myself finally sinking into a whisky from this lineup. Could be the complexity the peat adds, could be the desire for something a bit more savory after all the sweet, or it could just be that this is a good whisky. All of the above is possible, but I’m leaning towards the later.

And then, despite having more conventional forms of heat on hand, other places started to replicate this. Peaty scotch whisky is now produced all over the world, with some of the best-peated whiskies faring from places very far from Islay, including India and Japan. How is Peated Whisky Made? Starting out with the obvious, Ardbeg’s whiskies are some of the most famous smoky scotch brands in the world. They’re a great place to start if you’re in the nascent stages of peat appreciation. The ten-year-old expression is very pale in colour, with a very classic style of Islay peat on the nose; light flavours at the front palate showing lots of iodine, as is to be expected of peat cut from coastal bogs. Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. Big Peat is a remarkable marriage of Malt Whiskies only from the island of Islay. He is, of course, proudly without colouring or chill-filtration and bottled at high alcohol strength (46%), resulting in a naturally oily spirit that promises an incredible mouth-feel. Eventually, we descend into a smooth and surprisingly soft marzipan finish, which climaxes to reveal the peaty identity, which consists of Lapsang Souchong tea and smoking creosote. Big Peat was the first whisky in Douglas Laing’s Remarkable Regional Malts series, which launched in 2009. The idea behind the brand was to offer whisky drinkers the ‘ultimate distillation of Islay’.Without prejudice to the section Liability below, the Service may be temporarily unavailable during maintenance, updates, etc. We shall make reasonable efforts to inform you of any unavailability due to maintenance or updates. Nose: Unsurprisingly, a whiff of Big Peat is dominated by peat, lots of peat. However, it gently wafts through nasal passages, bringing with it a hint of earthy sea-salt smell that seems exemplary of a boggy, craggy spit of land amongst the British Isles.
