I highly recommend this one, as I enjoyed learning about these beautiful creatures, and only wish that I had discovered it sooner! Veronica doesn’t have family or friends nearby. Not that she knows about, anyway…And she has no idea where she’s going to leave her considerable wealth when she dies. Eileen the lady who comes daily to take care of her has her work cut out because Veronica is not a people person. And once she sets her mind on something, well...let's just say there's nothing on this earth powerful enough to stop her. It's been a very long time since I've had an adventure.Oh my gosh. This one was so much fun. Granted, it’s highly unlikely that scientists would take an 86-year-old into their base nor let her roam around the penguin rookery with them, and you’d have to wonder if there would be anyone left in Veronica’s life after a lifetime of virulently acerbic treatment of others, but these narratively convenient elements are tempered by the fact that Veronica never once comes across as a saint.

She can be found either collecting litter from the beach ('people who litter the countryside should be shot'), trying to locate her glasses ('someone must have moved them') or shouting I really loved Veronica's determination to undertake the trip, with the added humour of her career being the one to help with all things technological with a laptop.
Although these characters are not as immediately charming, they MOST definitely grow on you, and although a young man getting to know an Octogenarian may be a theme of both stories-the similarities end there!

Catching up on your best posts today – this is another one for my tbr pile. Sold to the gentleman in the west Wales labradoodle farm When John and I were married in December 2021, we had a pair of very small, hand-carved, wooden penguins on our wedding cake – a nod to what should have been our Antarctic honeymoon in January 2022. Penguins have meant a lot to us since we got engaged and it was always our intention to include them in some small way on our wedding day. This reader is at a loss in trying to describe the overpowering feelings and emotions generated by "Away With the Penguins" by Hazel Prior. This work of fiction covered topics such as World War II, adoption, conservation, climate change, and opening your heart after unspeakable sorrow. Author Prior has written a "gem" that will continue to stay with me. This is my favorite read of 2020. It is an uplifting tome I highly recommend. Now most people would simply see their solicitor, make the necessary arrangements and leave it at that; but then, Veronica McCreedy is not most people. I absolutely LOVED the way Hazel Prior included the penguin facts throughout - it was so much fun to learn about the little guys.

If you are a fan of books that challenge the notion that life is immutable once settled on a particular course and which sing the praises of re-invention and renewal then you will adore the beguiling wonder of Away With the Penguins. Veronica McCreedy, a resident of Scotland, ends up in Antarctica against the advice of scientists who warned her against it. She is well aware of her financial status and wields it to exert control over everyone around her, including, in some way, her pet penguin.
