About this deal

Practitioners have found this to be an engaging and interactive resource which produces a stimulating learning environment. This leads to Graham almost by accident involving another boy from training, Joe Flaherty (who is of course from across the sectarian divide to which the book’s title mainly refers) in finding Leanne’s house.

The Protestant boy is given a guided tour which is instructive without being clunkily "educational". Granted the dilemma of an asylum seeker from a ‘White List’ country, deemed to be safe but which isn’t, may need elucidating to a wider audience, yet while the novel is even-handed enough as between Protestant and Catholic viewpoints I struggled to see for what audience this could have been written, whom it was intended to educate. Also I expected more sweety final, where painted in detail the fate of the main characters at least ten years ahead.

Divided City by Theresa Breslin | Waterstones

Do we offer our learners the opportunity to explore their own life experiences in relation to sectarianism? It deals clearly with the sectarian issue and does not lessen the impact by avoiding the issue or masking it with a range of storylines.Breslin’s book will grab a few headlines, and if it gets people thinking, especially young people, but just as importantly, adults, then it’s done some good. Also it was an interesting explanation of the sectarianism here in Glasgow, based largely around football. How far as a school community do we challenge bigotry, prejudice and discrimination towards members, or presumed members, of a religious denomination?
