About this deal

Angel food cake: You can use store-bought or homemade sponge cake. You can also use lady fingers if in a pinch.

The traditional English trifle starts with a layer of ladyfingers or sponge cake soaked in liquor, fruit juice or even coffee. I made this for the family just this evening. It's been about 30 years since I've had a bowl of trifle and it was a big hit! The raspberry jelly with a little fruit added was excellent. The custard was excellent as always and the whipped topping was the icing on the cake. A most triumphant desert!!!Here, we used strawberries to add moisture to the cake base. We smashed the strawberries and let them sit with a couple of tablespoons of sugar for a few minutes before spooning the mixture over the pieces of pound cake. Chocolate Flavour Whip Mix: Sugar, Modified Potato Starch, Palm Oil, Fat Reduced Cocoa Powder, Gelling Agents (Diphosphates, Sodium Phosphates), Emulsifiers (Propylene Glycol Esters of Fatty Acids, Lecithins), Milk Chocolate Powder (2%) (Sugar, Cocoa Mass, Whole Milk Powder, Cocoa Butter, Skimmed Milk Powder), Lactose ( Milk), Milk Proteins, Colours (Plain Caramel, Carotenes), Whey Powder ( Milk), Calcium Carbonate, Anti-Caking Agent (Silicon Dioxide), Flavouring, Chocolate Flavoured Custard Powder: Maize Starch, Fat Reduced Cocoa Powder, Milk Chocolate Powder (2.5%) (Sugar, Cocoa Mass, Whole Milk Powder, Cocoa Butter, Skimmed Milk Powder), Colour (Plain Caramel), Trifle Topping Mix: Fully Hydrogenated Palm Oil, Sugar, Emulsifiers (Propylene Glycol Esters of Fatty Acids, Lecithins), Modified Maize Starch, Whey Powder ( Milk), Lactose ( Milk), Milk Proteins, Anti-Caking Agent (Silicon Dioxide), Stabiliser (Cellulose Gum), Flavouring, Colour (Carotenes), Trifle Sponge Fingers: Sugar, Wheat Flour, Whole Egg, Glucose-Fructose Syrup, Raising Agent (Ammonium Carbonates), Milk Proteins, Flavouring, Acid (Citric Acid), Chocolate Flavoured Sugar Sprinkles: Sugar, Vegetable Fats (Palm, Shea), Fat Reduced Cocoa Powder, Emulsifier (Lecithins), Glazing Agents (Gum Arabic, Shellac) If I had to choose one dessert as the most nostalgic for me, that would be this family recipe for English Trifle. Every holiday we would travel to my aunt’s house for a huge feast and a dazzling dessert table covered with homemade chocolate cake, lemon and mincemeat tarts, usually a pie of some sort, and of course, English Trifle. A trifle is a layered dessert that contains custard, sherry-soaked cake, fruit, jam and whipped cream. However, they showcased the whole lot at a fancy event in London at the end of last week. And I got to head along, on behalf of the M.E.N, to try it all. Sugar: Provides sweetness to the custard. If you want to lower the sugar content, you could also try subbing in an alternative such as stevia.

Lovely instant trifle mix, the only thing I don't really like about it is the dream topping 'cream' mix. I'd much prefer proper cream but on the whole, from one little box, you get a delicious tasting trifle that serves six people. Good quality and excellent value for money, I recommend it.If you need to set your custard layer, we recommend making your custard (for example, a pudding mix), and letting it cool. Once cooled down, stir it a bit and spoon it over the previous layers. Tightly cover and set the trifle bowl in the refrigerator for about half an hour until it is set, as needed. If you’re on the hunt for the perfect recipe to serve up a crowd, this English trifle recipe with custard is to die for and should definitely be added to your list of must-try dessert recipes. Egg yolks: Provide creaminess and a yellow pigment to the custard. Be sure to use the yolks of large eggs. Birds Trifle Raspberry serves 4 – 6 people, so it’s perfect for serving up at those family get-togethers.
