About this deal

Nor is Alex stagnant. My other favorite bit of the book is Alex's self-improvement plan. He's connected the dots on a few things after fighting the latest mana manipulation training device, and combined disciplines in a novel way. The weightlifting contests between him and the others are hilarious. Especially when Grimloch gets involved. After his parents died, Alex Roth had one desire: become a wizard. Through hard work, he was accepted into the University of Generasi, the world’s greatest academy of wizardry…

The Town of Alric was shrugging off sleep when Alex emerged from the bakery for the last time. The sunlight filtered through a haze of clouds and townsfolk trudged past the square’s fountain with their days’ tools and lunches in hand. A carriage—pulled by a set of proud horses—approached from down the road, their hooves clattering on the cobblestone. On the side of the carriage door was emblazoned the symbol of a lantern: the Sigil of the Traveller, the town’s patron saint. Ah, my friend! You are just in time for what is not my last stand!” the warrior stabbed a blazing sword through a tiashiva, blowing it to bits. The expedition is underway---and between setting up a base in Thameland and clearing out the monsters and dungeons in their way, Alex has one more hurdle. The Heroes have come to help. Well, all but the Saint, who can't enter the grounds thanks to the prohibitions on priests. Who are these people who were Marked like he was, yet unhindered, who have been clearing out dungeons ever since he left? And how much should he help them?Zote is a traveller from outside Hallownest who came to the Kingdom to fulfill a promise. This is ultimately revealed to be a promise of glory for himself. He named his nail "Life Ender" because names supposedly have power. Unfortunately, because it is made of shellwood, it cannot deal damage. While he claims to be the strongest warrior in the land, he is found trapped by weak enemies or claiming the glory of another bug's deeds. He regards the Knight as beneath him and accuses them of constantly getting in his way. I mean not for today, obviously, but there was yesterday and Firstday so that’s two silver pieces—” Alex had seen enough of McHarris’ rages to know that he meant it. The young man tore off his apron and scrambled to grab his pay. He sniffed the air near the eggs as he bent: a nasty stench confirmed his suspicions from early this morning. Keeping his face neutral, he jumped up and scuttled for the exit to the front room of the shop. The author is clearly talented. The writing, dialogue and ideas are all good. But the pacing after they reach the wizard school is terrible to an extend that almost made me dnf. Following our MC get stronger and better the same way (hard work and a cheat sheet called the Mark) is just boring. All of the characters are robots that just work, work, work. There are no stakes since the Mark will make sure that the MC will overcome everything and, unsurprisingly, a universty and perfect recall is a perfect match. Boring. The minotaur’s image shattered, as the bolt drove through the pazuzite’s skull. Ripp slipped from limp hands, and the air elementals were there, catching him on cushions of wind.

And for the story itself, well you can feel it's a royal road story because the storytelling is more similar to a television show (with random feeler episodes) rather than a more conditional book storytelling. Does it matter to me? Not really, but hey, there are some really random chapters that have no real plot or character development in them. This is fine if you know what to expect.

I enjoyed the book, but i've grown very pessimistic about books that originate on Royal Road. Almost every other series i've read from Royal Road has started out ok but then devolves into a platform for liberals to push their agenda instead of a fun story to read during down time. Whistling a jaunty tune as the guards grappled with McHarris somewhere in the bakeshop, he strolled down the street with spirits higher than they’d been since before he and his sister were orphaned. Rather than die or serve other Heroes like past Fools, he takes a stand, rejects divine decree…and leaves. With his little sister, his childhood friend, and her cerberus, Alex flees for the university, hoping to research the mystery of the Ravener. He’ll make lifelong friends, learn magic from mad wizards, practice alchemy, fight mana vampires and try to pay tuition. Their inn sat at the end of the street—a busy place near the centre of town—and it had been home for Alex and his sister ever since they had been orphaned. Master and Mrs. Lu were kind folks, and he had spent most of his childhood as friends with their daughter, Theresa.
