About this deal

This renowned reference directory, first published in 1858, is an essential resource for anyone who works with or is linked to the Church of England, the Church of Ireland, the Church in Wales or the Episcopal Church of Scotland. Lambeth Palace Library is the historic library of the Archbishops of Canterbury and the principal library and record office for the history of the Church of England. Its rich collections are important for an immense variety of topics, as well as a significant resource for genealogy. The Clergy of the Church of England Database (CCEd) is a collaborative project offering online biographical data on clergymen for the period 1540-1835 from archives in England and Wales. Where a member of the clergy also holds a temporal title, this is always preceded in writing by the ecclesiastical one. The Reverend J K Smith at the first mention, and Mr/Mrs/Miss/Ms Smith thereafter; or the Reverend Lord/Lady Jocelyn Smith at the first mention, and Lord/Lady Jocelyn thereafter.

If you have already completed our forms via another method, such as from your Diocese, you do not need to complete them again. Updating your entryA typical biographical entry for a clergyman may include where they studied, when they obtained a degree and a work history of where and when they performed their clerical duties. As with many professional directories those listed may have been actively working, or may have retired. Biographies would only be removed when a person died. Use this newly expanded section to find individuals in particular types of appointment and specialist institutions and networks.

Scanned copies of other early editions have also begun to appear on the World Wide Web. Horace Cox's very brief obituary in The Times, 11 October 1918; p.5, states that he had retired in 1912 and had ceased to take an active part in his business, which also produced The Field, The Queen and The Law TimesThe well-known tradition of having an extensive but anonymous preface offering a general review of events within the Anglican Communion – together with some occasionally sharp and controversial commentary – evolved gradually during the early part of the 20th century. [3] Previous prefaces had tended to be much briefer and they had often been limited merely to explaining the directory's in-house policies. After the events following the publication of the 1987/88 edition, which had ended with the death by suicide of the Revd Gareth Bennett, this tradition of the anonymous preface was discontinued. An institution subscription provides access to the directory for multiple users.
