About this deal

Bike trailers are growing in popularity as a way to allow your younger kids to come on adventures with you. Unlike bike seats, you can get trailers that can accommodate two kids – like this one from Instep – and they keep them protected if the weather turns while you’re out. Provided you get your pet used to it gradually, it can also work for transporting smaller breed dogs too. The Coho 12mm Thru Axle allows bikes with 12mm rear thru axles to connect to the Coho XC trailer. Multiple thread pitches and lengths are available. A Coho 12mm Thru Axle is required for any bike with a 12mm rear thru axle to use the Coho XC. Use the Coho Thru Axle Fit Guide below to determine the correct axle for your bike. Coho 12mm Thru Axle

Most Burley trailers come equipped with a Steel Hitch, Tow Bar, and Tow Bar Mount (the Travoy and the Coho XC have their own unique hitching systems). In most cases, this is all you need to safely connect the trailer to your bike. Some specialty bikes may need an additional adapter or thru axle. This section will help you determine if you need an adapter or thru axle and, if so, which one.

Plastic bottom rattles when using empty, heavy, axle mount for the trailer has a tendency to rotate forward due to the torque from the weight Like all smaller, two-wheel trailers, stability is always an issue off road – fit the widest tyres you can and air them down. But for forest roads and bike paths, you’ll have no issues at all. Otherwise, size up to the Large, which sports 20in wheels and a wider axle. Build quality is excellent: the design is simple but very well made, with a finish kit designed for longevity. The wooden loading bay is coated in a grippy finish and cut with attachment points – and being made from (recycled) wood, it’s very easy to modify too.

The Nutted Axle Adapter includes a set of threaded adapters that replace the nuts on your current nutted axle, allowing your bike to connect to the Coho XC cargo trailer. This adapter is required to use the Coho XC on bikes with nutted axles. Multiple thread pitches available. Nutted Axle Adapter Whatever kind of trailer cycle you use, you should instruct your co-rider to stay seated. The side-to-side lurch from your passenger pedalling while standing up will severely affect your steering. The trailer cycle has been around since the 1930s, when it was invented in England by Bill Rann. Recently it’s enjoyed something of a renaissance, although with a few notable exceptions the modern versions are actually worse than the Rann trailers of yesteryear. We haven’t included them here, but there are many cargo trailers on the market designed primarily for city use – and a variety of DIY schematics to be found online for those handy with a welding torch. Our friends at Campfire Cycling in Tucson – longtime trailer fans – have compiled a great DIY roundup, which you can read here.If you live in the UK, you can hire all kinds of trailers – for children, dogs, and cargo – as well as tag-alongs from Bike Trailer Hire. The company also sells its rental fleet too. A:It will depend on the size and threading of your axle. Use the Adapter Guide and Axle Fit Guide in Step 4 to determine which part is right for you. The bikes are secured by the rear tire and fork base, with the front tire pointing toward the sky. The HangOver manages to carry half a dozen bikes while taking up minimal space.

Bear in mind that some trailers are now discontinued but are still worth hunting down. Chariot is the brand that now lives under the Thule umbrella – older models are just as good as the new ones and are long been favoured by expeditionist families and you’ll see them in many of the pictures in this post. The BOB Ibex is a popular option for trail maintenance – effectively, it’s a Yak with a coil spring – and the Weber Monoporter is another interesting take on a single-wheel cargo trailer. One of my favourite trailer bikes – which we’ve included in this roundup as it was only recently discontinued – is the Tout Terrain Streamliner trailer bike, pictured below. These trailers are also ones that hitch to the rear wheel axle, so they might not be the best option for electric bikes with rear hub motors. The manufacturers also advise that these models are really designed for bikes with wheels that are a maximum of 26 inches wide. Any larger than this and the trailer is at greater risk of tipping – especially if you take corners too fast. Most bicycles will have a standard dropout. They won’t all look like this, but the key thing to look for is a flat area around and below the axle where the Steel Hitch can sit flush against the frame. Hooded Dropout Some standard bike trailers aren’t designed to handle the high speeds that can be generated by electric bikes. You’ll need to look for one that is robust, well-constructed and it’ll be a bonus if it has suspension and decent tires. Bike trailers use a hitch arm and coupler attachment that can easily attach to any kind of bike, including road bikes, mountain bikes, cruisers, hybrid bikes, e-bikes, and even thru-axle disc brakes. For this Gear Index, we’re focusing on models that are designed with off-road use in mind and are certified for human transportation, but dig around online and you’ll find plenty of more affordable alternatives as a means of going car-lite. The use-life of your trailer cycle will be longer if it can accommodate a growing child. Some have handlebars that can be clamped further up the frame to suit a bigger child. You can also raise the saddle on any trailer cycle.
