About this deal

tuner (which enables 4K broadcasts and 3D audio support, and combines broadcast and ISP and over-the-air content), the A80J’s picture impresses across all viewing scenarios. The Sony also supports 4K/120Hz gaming, and under these circumstances, the input lag drops to a very respectable 9ms.

The Sony A80J is a cracking mid-range TV that delivers impressive pictures, great sound and a solid set of features. I also noticed that the A80J’s colours are a little cooler in temperature and plainer in appearance, the reds of the Cafe de Paris setting and pink of Sandie’s gown in the scene where Eloise first travels back in the sixties in Last Night in Soho lack the LG’s vibrancy, and in some instances in The Dig, complexions are noticeably more pallid and less vivid than the LG’s warmer, more expressive presentation.Just one tap of the Cast button on your Android or iOS screen is all you need to supersize the things you love. OLED Organic Light Emitting Diode is panel technology that allows each individual pixel to produce light rather than relying on a backlight.

Pre-calibration the Sony A80J offers a decent attempt at producing depth, and it’s more forthright and direct in its presentation than other TVs I’ve tested recently. As part of this mission, whenever we review a product we send the company a series of questions to help us gauge and make transparent the impact the device has on the environment. You can either go for a wide setting for maximum stability, a narrow setting for smaller TV stands or a raised setting that provides added clearance under the screen for a soundbar. Concessions to gamers outside of the PS5 crowd are few: there’s no AMD FreeSync or Nvidia G-Sync support, with HDMI VRR only just added in an update earlier in 2022. It wasn't, though, the best performance-per-pound TV of 2021, because this A80J beat it on that metric.

While the A80J’s system is referred to as Acoustic Surface Audio+, just like the A90J’s, it actually has just half as much power (a total of 30W rather than 60W), and that is made clear in the presentation. As the screen is the speaker on this BRAVIA XR 4K OLED TV, sound matches precisely with what’s on the screen for a truly immersive experience. For general sharpness and detail, the A80J more or less matches the flagship A90J, and that puts it head and shoulders above most rivals in those regards. A dedicated 4K test pattern revealed no overscan, no issues displaying crisp 1- or 2-pixel lines, and deft treatment of color saturation, brightness, and sharpness across its 18 graphical figures. It covers 99% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut and does so with decent accuracy, achieving an average Delta E score of 2.or Ultra HD) refers to the resolution of a TV’s display, which equates to the number of horizontal and vertical pixels that it can display. There’s a slight excess of blue in the greyscale, but that’s easy to correct using the calibration controls. Surprisingly, our main disappointment isn’t the missing backlight, but the unsatisfying sponginess of the buttons.
