Like most Insta360 launches, we’ve also come across a few bugs. It has frozen on a few occasions, and one low-light mode clip was rendered unreadable for some reason. However, these mostly cropped up when handling footage after a shoot, not actually during capture. When it comes to ease of use, the Go 3 is a breeze to get your head around. The core unit couldn't be simpler with just a one-button press, and the recording status is illustrated by an LED light on the front. When you add a touch screen to the mix, usability is worlds apart from the Go 2 – a huge upgrade.

After 15 minutes the Insta360 X3 dropped from 100% to 87%, suggesting it could actually last a lot longer than 81 minutes. However, following 45 minutes of capture it was at 49% battery, closer to the claim.

We found the process fastest on a laptop, as mouse control just feels that bit more precise than on a phone-size touchscreen. 360-degree edited clips are set at 1080p when exporting from the phone app or Insta360 Studio, which may seem too limited when maximum res is 5.7K. However, we saw little obvious benefit after manually changing this to 4K resolution in the desktop Insta360 Studio software. And if you’re looking to produce remotely normal-looking videos, you’re not going to be using all of that raw 5.7K information anyway. The Insta360 X3 has two 48-megapixel cameras with 1/2-inch sensors and f/1.9 aperture lenses. These are larger and higher-res than the 17MP, 1/2.3-inch sensors of the GoPro Max, and those of the One X2.Robust over-moulded construction with an IP 54 rating, the laser is water/ debris resistant and can withstand up to 1 m drops. Insta360's FreeFrame feature is also a lot of fun, and perfect for less experienced shooters. It lets you capture photos and videos, and then reframe your shot easily within the app. While it only appears to capture 16:9 footage, the Go 3 actually shoots a more square frame, so you can losslessly switch between 16:9, 19:6, and 1:1.

The Action Pod's touch controls were also intuitive, borrowing the menu system from other Insta360 action cameras and tuning it to the Go 3's capabilities. Within the settings, I was able to do things on the touch display that I couldn't do in the smartphone app, such as turn off the LED light on the front of the camera and mute the beeping noise. Devices that do not meet the above requirements may still be able to use the app to control the camera, however, performance of some processor-intensive and AI-powered features may be sub-optimal. When shooting in FreeFrame mode, there isn't scope to adjust the degree of stabilization – that's managed post-capture – but in standard video mode, you can choose between three levels or turn it off. That’s the display glass and, much more important, the lenses. The fear factor is unavoidable with 360-degree cameras, so you might want to buy a lens cover (not included with the standard bundle) or Insta360’s accidental damage insurance. There are no removable, replaceable outer lens elements here.

However, these numbers aren’t really aspects to focus on, beyond the one key mode they may help to enable. This is 4K video when shooting with a single lens, rather than in the 360 mode. However, this can be fixed in video editing software. Insta360’s own software offers a couple of color and clarity boosting options. I haven’t noticed any ghosting in Active HDR, though, which is the classic issue of HDR video where combined frames are shot sequentially, leading to “afterimage” doubling of moving subjects. Before I even cover image quality, I have to commend Insta360 for making a wireless controller that works so reliably. Having the small Action Pod to hand and seeing what the Go 3 was recording, even when it was out of eyeshot, was incredibly liberating. Yes, wireless control has been available via the smartphone app for a while, but the Action Pod's compact size made it feel much less clunky than navigating the Insta360 app when filming.
