About this deal

Try to be patient with yourself when learning to use the prescribed device. Like any other skill, learning to read with a low-vision device requires regular practice over many weeks. Perhaps even more important than the type of light is the position of the light—particularly the distance from the lamp to the task you are doing or to your eye. Bring the lamp closer to help maximize the light delivered to the task and your eye. It is recommended that you try on a range of colors and styles during the low vision examination to determine which color or colors work best for you.

Rehabmart is pleased to offer an ever expanding collection of innovative writing and reading aids from leading vendors in the field, including North Coast, Sammons Preston, Maddak, LSS, MaxiAids, Grip Solutionsand Nexis Preparedness Systems.

I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble, that sounds really frustrating. So just to clarify, are you adding ink on one side and color on the other? Or are you adding color and ink to only one side? I just want to make sure I understand before giving you too many recommendations! When working on a non-absorbent surface like acetate, coloring mediums act very differently. Many water-based mediums require absorption into the surface for the medium to dry. But acetate isn’t one of these surfaces. Because of this, you need to use a coloring medium that will dry on a non-absorbent surface. The Best (and Worst) Coloring Mediums for Acetate

Our acetate film and sheets are 100% petroleum-free and certified as 100% compostable. Acetate is categorized alongside paper and board for return and recovery purposes; it can be recycled, composted or incinerated without releasing any toxic chemicals. Proper lighting is critical for good vision. As we age, a person age 65 or older probably needs 15 times as much light to read as does a 10-year-old. And importantly, a person with low vision may need three times as much light to read as a person their age who does not have a vision loss. Therefore, flexible-arm desk or floor task lamps are perhaps the most helpful and important non-optical devices for many people. A flexible-arm desk lamp They can be used on ovens and stoves, washer and dryer dials, thermostats, microwaves, phones, calculators, and countless other applications. You need to think about not layering color on color but blending colors into colors. If you choose to blend one color on top of another, you may see some of the color layers, but it won’t be as vibrant. Grafix Acetate is also 100% biodegradable! All of acetate’s main components are produced from natural wood pulp and cotton, rather than fossil fuels. No food-based agriculture is used to make our acetate sheets and film; the wood pulp is sourced from SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative®) managed plantations, which typically plant more trees than are harvested to ensure no endangered hardwoods are used up. They bring reading and writing materials closer to your eye, thus helping to achieve “relative distance” magnification: enlarging letters and words by bringing them closer. Because they come in various sizes and shapes (usually round or square), touch dots can help locate a specific setting on a dial, control, or device. I find that most of the inks, especially the PITT pens and similar, they need a good amount of drying time so that they don’t smudge. I usually leave them for at least 5-10 minutes before seeing if they smudge. Because you are working on a non-absorbent surface, it’s going to take them longer to set up.

When choosing a medium for coloring on acetate, it’s important to understand the properties of your mediums. Will it work on non-absorbent surfaces? Is the medium water-based or oil based? Understanding the properties of your mediums goes a long way towards getting great results with coloring on acetate. Working on a Non-Absorbent Surface Be careful to position the light so that it does not shine directly into your eye and creates glare. A person with a stroke and resulting hemianopia (loss of half of the visual field) can benefit from a typoscope when reading. You’ll probably have to get used to holding the reading material much closer to your eyes than before. Reading at this very close distance may be uncomfortable at first, but it won’t hurt your eyes or cause your vision problem to become worse.
