About this deal

Charlie Carpenter is determined to make her vintage clothing store, The Old Hat, a success. Part of her campaign to entice people to shop at The Old Hat involves getting to know the rich socialites in her small town. Joining the Agathas's mystery book club was part of the plan in spite of the fact that she feels out of place and doesn't enjoy the bitchy gossip. The pacing of the book was absolutely spot on, at no point did it lull causing my interest to drop, it was just constantly on point. It was atmospheric and creepy, a feeling that for me, started with the front cover and kept at a steady pace all the way through the book. I mean can we just talk about that front cover for a hot second - a walkway that is dark at the bottom and seems to go on forever - at this point I'm walking down it and don't care if there are killer clowns at the bottom of it - I mean that's a slight lie but my enthusiasm to walk down it is real. I didn’t expect the story to go the way it did, it had lots of characters with different storylines but they all weaved together brilliantly and all connected near the end with the big twist. The description of the town made me feel like I was right there. The parallel storylines kept me involved not only in Izzy’s plot but the others & the characters had distinct personalities.

Wow. So good and read in little over 24 hours. I even said to someone I’d probably recommend it when I was at 50%! A group of pensioners (Elizabeth Best; Ron Ritchie; Joyce Meadowcroft; and Ibrahim Arif) [1] set about solving the mystery of the murder of a property developer [2] in the luxurious Cooper's Chase retirement village near the fictitious village of Fairhaven in Kent. [1] Publication [ edit ] Talk about the characters, both good and bad. Describe their personalities and motivations. Are they fully developed and emotionally complex? Or are they flat, one-dimensional heroes and villains?Charley Carpenter is a likable main character. As in most cozy mysteries, her love interest is the detective assigned to the case, Marc Trenault. The romance doesn't overshadow the mystery...there's just enough to sweeten the story. I like the fact that she is independent, intelligent and a strong woman. Nagel did an excellent job developing her characters. The wealthy members of the book club are irritatingly snobbish, but not overly so. Marc has just a bit of jerk thrown in among his good looks and charm. And, Charley's friends have personalities that help move the plot along nicely. All in all, a very well written cozy mystery and an excellent first novel!! I can't wait to read more by Leslie Nagel! I was almost holding my breath at certain points in this dark, twisty tale. Emotions about Stephanie aside, this is a tense and riveting thriller that I just couldn't put down. We even get to see Lizzie's ex, Adam's perspective. Now, that just increased the creepy factor! Especially as he started ramping up his abusive and cruel behaviour. In discussion with Amy & Marion, Maggie mentioned Janet was gay. Did you find this relevant to the story?

After a 10-way publishing auction, [1] Penguin Random House acquired the rights to The Thursday Murder Club and its sequel The Man Who Died Twice for a seven-figure sum [3] in 2019. [4]I bet you’d love to belong to a book club where each member was called Agatha, in honor of the great Agatha Christie 😉. When thirty-year-old Izzy ran away from her abusive partner and moved into her recently deceased aunt’s house in the little seaside town of Dun Laoghaire, she was hoping for a quieter and safer time, in which she could forget her past trauma and focus on herself and her future. When her aunt’s neighbour invites Izzy to join their local book club, Izzy feels like it would be a great way of getting a fresh start. However, not a single member of the book club, nor their spouses, comes without their share of baggage. Combine this with her ex, who is not ready to accept the end of their relationship, and Izzy’s fresh start might not be so imminent, after all. An exciting mysteries using the old framework of a book club tale. It uses creative and original aspects on this theme. For a first book, the characters are developed and likable. The Agathas is a group of wealthy and elite booklovers of Oakwood, Ohio who meet monthly to read, review and eat lunch at member's homes. The program is selected yearly, printed and sent to each member. This years mysteries that were selected are J. A. Jance's RATTLESNAKE CROSSING, THE ABC MURDERS By Agatha Christie, MURDERED SHE MEOW by Rita Mae Brown and Sarah Graves' MALLETS AFORETHOUGHT. (All excellent)

The Book Club Murders: The Oakwood Book Club Mystery Series

This was an enjoyable psychological thriller with plenty of dark and intense moments, some bits did make me grimace a little but they didn’t detract from the plot. The author managed to hold my attention from the very start to the finish. Lindsay has been divorced once and is now married to long-time boyfriend Joseph Molinari. She has a younger sister named Cat and a father named Marty, who was also a member of the SFPD. Marty left Lindsay's mother when Lindsay was 13. Izzy flees from her controlling boyfriend, Adam, and moves into her late aunt’s house. Adam is hot on her tail and won’t leave her alone. When Izzy relocates from the city to the seaside town of Dun Laoghaire to escape a controlling ex, she thinks she's found the perfect haven. The town welcome her and she's soon invited to the local book club - but the group is established and tight-knit and each has their own issues that drag Izzy down. I’m so glad I’m not a member of this book club. I don’t think they ever get round to discussing the books. Too busy with the local gossip. And that’s before things get really serious. We only talk about crime novels and serial killer thrillers at any book club I belong to. We don’t act them out for real – thankfully. At least I don’t.

But then, murder happens - and it's someone connected to the book club members. Not long after, another one bites the dust, and clues lead to passages from book club selections and the suspicion that both dirty deeds were done by the same hands. Fingers begin pointing toward another of the club members, so over Marc's objections, Charlie's valuable insights translate to her acceptance on the investigative team. Finally, she even convinces him to let her use her knowledge and skills as an inside-the-club informant in the hope of ferreting out which is the killer. Of course, that puts Charlie squarely in the crosshairs of someone who will do anything - including kill again - to keep from being identified.
