About this deal

Carroll uses fantasy and surrealism to reveal that life is better as a companion than being a best friend and understanding that our choices can cause outcomes that we could have never expected. A compulsively readable, introspective tale about the road not taken… At its heart, this is an arresting and imaginative meditation on life. Using the magic word that changes depending on the person who has the tattoo, he can go back and forth until he has decided who and where he wants to be. So he buried his life’s dream and drove away from that cemetery in the new convertible, which took him as far as North Carolina before it died, too. The first whiff was so gorgeous, so overpowering, but best of all so utterly foreign he just stood mesmerized in the doorway of the plane with eyes closed, sniffing.

A beautiful hard back masterpiece that will be my constant friend as will all manifestations of Graham Patterson. I think I’d be too tempted, though that says more about me than it does about the circumstances of my life. Art school, London, a mambabatok in the Philippines, Marseille, but I spent the most time in Japan .Breakfast is a beautiful musing on moments of personal choice, the big ones, the ones that are rooted in our existential crisis between identities of who we say we want to be vs the rules by which we choose to live our lives. All we can do is work hard and love hard, try to do the right things without letting our ego trip us up, and hope the boogeymen stay away for another day. The decision sets off a series of extraordinary events that changes his life forever in ways he never could have imagined.

Un semplice tatuaggio all'apparenza, ma che al tocco, pronunciando la parola "Pigna", il nome del suo cane, e "uno", "due" o "tre" a seconda della vita che voleva visionare, lo avrebbe come proiettato nella vita giusta. As Patterson leapfrogs back and forth through time and among his various possible existences, he gradually comes to understand “how his behavior influences and shapes others’ lives even after he was long gone from them. My relationship with Carroll — if you’ll allow me a bit of an indulgence here — is, once again, complicated.

For years, Patterson has worked as a comedian, hoping to make it big, but he has finally recognized that that’s never going to happen. Using a small frying pan and cooking only one or two eggs at a time, spoon hot butter over the top of each egg as it cooks. I thought the ending was a little lacking, and there were some details I wish he'd have spent more time on, and other parts of the book, I wish he'd have spent less.

Also, and this is nitpicky, in the passages where Graham is meant to be a successful comedian, the jokes don’t land. Not with only 2,695 miles on the damned machine, and most definitely not when you’ve just base jumped off the cliff of your old life into the great foggy unknown. To be fair, there had been some chuckling here and there, an amused snort or two and a few snickers at his best jokes, but big loud “ho ho! It will surprise you, make you laugh and scare you — and then, just when you think it’s over, add several extra twists before bringing this Rubik’s Cube of a story to just the right, emotionally muted conclusion. Ruth Murphy’s face went through a whole Olympics of different expressions—anger, sadness, resignation—before she spoke.Lines intended to be profound (“I’ve never been able to see or feel, to create from the middle of my soul”) occasionally seem sophomoric, and the descriptive writing once in a while seems half-hearted (The tattoo is “insanely intricate”).

When he stops in a small town, he decides to take a gamble and request a very strange tattoo in a beguiling tattoo parlor. It might seem like a dead end, asking an old flame what happened to a famous artist forty years after his disappearance, but it ends up being a good bet. Not that the plot is hard to follow - just the opposite - but the protagonists are simply dragged through the narrative as opposed to shaping it. It showed a large run-down, vandalized, and badly boarded up salmon-colored roadside diner set alone on some bleak desert stretch of highway that looked like it could just as well have been on the moon. It almost felt like the tattoos were speaking a whole new visual language to Patterson’s eyes and sensibilities. After that, Graham’s life – all three of them – intersects with those he loves and others who have also got the ‘breakfast’ tattoo until he has to make a choice and stick with it forever. The first Graham can see, hear, and follow the second Graham, but he cannot touch or interact with him.
