About this deal

Choose a compost bin to suitthe amount of space you have available and the quantity of waste your garden produces. For beginners and those with a small garden,a compact plastic bin is oftena good choice. Larger gardens and allotments may be able to fill a large wooden compost ‘bay’, such as those made from pallets. Keen composters may prefer several in a row, to hold compost at different stages of readiness.Bins of less than 1 cubic m (1.3 cubic yd) are generally less efficient than larger ones, but will still make compost successfully, althoughless rapidly. Used correctly biochar can have a tremendous positive impact on soil health and plant growth. In recent years, adding biochar to compost has become the recommended way to "activate" biochar and help ensure success. Think of raw biochar as a dry sponge. To activate it, (i.e. charge the biochar with water and plant nutrients), it needs to soak in the compost. When you add the SoilFixer humification agent, not only do you increase colloidal humus, and improve composting, as biochar is 80% of the CHA (SoilFixer humification agent) mix, you are activating and adding biochar to your soil. Using CHA you make a DIY version of SF60 - our Biochar Super Compost. Green– this is usually soft, leafy material, including grass clippings, sappy green plants (such as annual weeds), crop waste, old fruit and vegetables and kitchen peelings. These materials are rich in nitrogen Minerals: Rich in phosphorus, potassium, and copper, mushrooms are a great source of minerals. Research has found that mushrooms contain more potassium than a glass of orange juice. When you add mushrooms to your pile, these minerals become part of it. You later add the decayed matter to your plants, feeding them with these vital minerals.

If your compost pile contains a high quantity of dry matter (brown material) in your heap, like straws, your garden compost pile will take longer to decompose. The protected heap is mixed and turned every two to three days for two weeks, with noticeable heat or even steam evident through the first three turnings. You can use a thermometer if you like, which is the most accurate way to see if your compost pile has hit the magic numbers, which range between 130-140°F (55-63°C). Or, simply use your hand. If you can’t hold your fist in the mix for more than a few seconds, the heap has hit the ideal temperature range for its transition to top-quality compost. White, ash-like remains on bits of plant material in the heap are further evidence that your hot composting project is going well. Curing CompostYou will often see urine (pee) listed as a compost activator. We are highly dubious of the real value of adding pee to compost. Urine has a tiny amount of urea, which in turn has tiny amounts of nitrogen. If you are hot composting - the addition of +99% water (which takes heat to remove it as steam) is negative. In a cold composting system, if the heap is very dry urine is OK. If the heap is damp, it compounds aeration issues. Our expertise says those seeing really positive impact probably have compost bins that were too dry and the water is improving the process.

This is a new term introduced by SoilFixer. During composting, compounds known as humus (or colloidal humus) are formed. These compounds are the real active items in compost (read here). Typically compost contains less than 1-5% of these valuable compounds. A humification agent increases the amount of colloidal humus in your final compost typically to 15-30%. Unfortunately, the composting process may take ages to complete, which creates the need for compost starters and accelerators. These products contain microorganisms that create the right environment to promote faster decomposition. Oxford English Dictionary, 11th Ed: garrotte is normal British English spelling, with single r alternate. Article title is US English spelling variant. Using the above definitions of 'activator' and 'inoculator', the SoilFixer Compost Humification Agent (CHA) is both an activator and inoculator. We are not aware of any other compost additive that acts to increase humification. It also helps to reduce compost odours, lower nitrous oxide and methane (potent climate change gases). It’s best not to add fresh food waste to the pile like meat, fish or diary. Not only do they make the pile smell bad, but it can also invite unwanted pests to your garden. Too Slow? This is a new term introduced by SoilFixer. During composting, compounds known as humus (or colloidal humus) are formed. These compounds are the real active items in compost (read here). If heat (temperature) is the secret tofast composting, what benefit do all the compostingactivators on sale really have? By keeping the compost heap at a higher temperature Compost Accelerator helps to break down waste in to smaller pieces, whilst retaining all of the nutrients needed to help plants grow.

Can refer to either home-made garden compost or seed/potting compost: • Garden compost is a soil improver made from decomposed plant waste, usually in a compost bin or heap. It is added to soil to improve its fertility, structure and water-holding capacity. Seed or potting composts are used for growing seedlings or plants in containers - a wide range of commercially produced peat-free composts are available, made from a mix of various ingredients, such as loam, composted bark, coir and sand, although you can mix your own. compost in your own garden. This avoids environmental costs in terms oftransport or industrial processing, and you end up with a free, sustainable compost that will benefit your soil and plants. You could just scatter it over the forming compost. An ideal rate would be 4 oz (100g) per square metre. Don’t add any more until you have built up a layer of fresh waste to a depth of about 10 inches (250mm). Alternatively you could make up a solution of the same amount of sulphate of ammonia by dissolving it in 2 to 3 pints of water and, using a watering can, sprinkling it over the compost. The effect that lime has on compost But here is the catch - unless your waste has no nitrogen (or not enough) then adding more will not change things. Most compost waste simply does not need extra nitrogen. The last civilian executions in Spain, both by garroting, were those of the poisoner Pilar Prades in May 1959 and the spree killer José María Jarabo in July 1959. Recent legislation had caused many crimes (such as robbery–murder) to fall under the jurisdiction of military law; thus, prosecutors rarely requested civilian executions. Military executions were still performed in Spain until the 1970s. The garrotings of Heinz Chez (real name Georg Michael Welzel) and Salvador Puig Antich in March 1974, both convicted in the Francoist State of killing police officers, were the last state-sanctioned garrotings in Spain and in the world.

Hot Composting Basics

To start your compost pile, you’ll need 2 parts brown material and 1 part green materials (as show on the image in this article) Unfortunately the delivery company will be unable to remove items from the pallet or take the pallet away with them and delivery will be made to the kerbside. Set up two compost bins. When one bin is full dig out the compost from this bin and move it to the other. The act of moving it will aerate the compost. Digging it over will cause the material to be’ fluffed up’ which means that there may not be room for everything moved from the first bin. This being the case, just leave the surplus in the first bin. Don’t be tempted to press down and compact the compost as you load it into the second compost bin as this will force the air out of it when you need to keep it in. La Sede / Exposiciones permanentes / Sala de Pascual Duarte I". Fundacioncela.com (in Spanish). Archived from the original on 14 April 2009 . Retrieved 16 September 2009. If your heap is too wet the chances are it has too much water or nitrogen. Turn the pile regularly to aerate & keep the temperature under control. Add some brown materials like shredded cardboard, newspaper or small twigs to balance it out. Too Dry?

If you don’t use any accelerator at all, the fresh waste will deteriorate at a much slower rate. It will go as nature prescribes. The first thing you are likely to see is mould appearing on the waste. This will be the initial natural breakdown phase and it may last for a week or two. Then after this the mould will disappear and the microorganisms will get to work on what the mould has generated. If possible, turn your compost several times a year. This will speed up composting and help ensure all the ingredients get broken down. However,it can be hard work, so if you can’t manage it, don’t despair – as long as the ingredients are well balanced and speed isn’t a priority, then composting will usually happen naturally. However,if you’re gettingpoor results, turning should improve things. If you add nothing to your compost and rely completely on the forces of nature, then there is one thing that you must do to accelerate composting of green waste. Do what you can to get air into it. The best system of all, for this, is the compost tumbler. These are designed to keep turning over the mass. Every time you roll over a compost tumbler you are going to open up any lumps and allow air in. Biochar can be mixed with finished compost as a means of activating the biochar. Biochar can also be added to the compost mix to co-compost biochar and waste. This creates activated compost-biochar such as SF40 and SF60.For every gardener, compost is a very vital commodity – it is the gold that gets your plants to grow and thrive. Most gardeners prefer using compost on their crops, since it is organic.
