About this deal

Sometimes only a poem will do. These poetic prescriptions and wise words of advice offer comfort, delight and inspiration for all; a space for reflection, and that precious realisation – I’m not the only one who feels like this. You’re not alone! You’re not mad, you’re not sad, and what’s more, if they wrote it 700 years ago, everybody has to go through this. It’s part of life”. This is the second audio book I have ever listened to. The first was We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda ngozi Adichie. Evening walks had me trying this out, in favour of repetitive lyrics, or rhythmic footsteps and labored breathing. It seems to work for me. It’s mixed commercial/residential building, so we’ve got a stupid mortgage,” Alma explains. “But it’s our home, so we don’t have to pay rent for the shop. And that’s key, because it is an experiment.”

That, I think, is the power in it. That sense of complicity you get for how you feel. You don’t necessarily have the language to express it yourself, but somebody else can express it much more elegantly than you can. Under five broad headings, this short book covers everything from Anxiety and Convalescence to Heartbreak and Regret. I most appreciated the discussion of slightly more existential states, such as Feelings of Unreality, for which Sieghart prescribes a passage from John Burnside’s “Of Gravity and Light,” about the grounding Buddhist monks find in menial tasks. Pay attention to life’s everyday duties, the poem teaches, and higher insights will come.

A perfect introduction for me into poetry. There are some I'd like to revisit and other works I'd like to see from different authors. Market Drayton is a charming market town in Shropshire, England, with a rich history and vibrant community. From its bustling cattle market to its beautiful gardens and countryside, there`s something for everyone to enjoy in Market Drayton. Poet Deborah Alma believes we all need a daily dose of verse. As well as writing and editing collections of poetry, she runs the Poetry Pharmacy in Bishop’s Castle, Shropshire. For William, poetry has never been the distant, lofty pursuit that it's sometimes portrayed as. He's always been an advocate of the therapeutic power of poems. It was this conviction in the power of poetry to transform our lives that led him to become a very different kind of pharmacist. Sieghart founded Forward Publishing in 1986, with Neil Mendoza, and turned it into one of the largest publishing agencies in the world. Forward published magazines in 131 countries for some of the world's largest corporations. The business was sold to WPP in 2001.

This course will reward anyone who wants to bring more wonder and connection into their daily life. It is designed to reward both those who are completely new to poetry and to bring fresh inspiration to more experienced poetry readers and writers. All that matters is to come with an open heart and mind. Head to Blists Hill Victorian Town from 6pm until 9pm to soak up the carnival atmosphere as you explore the wonderful Victorian streets after dark. I would ask lots of questions. The fact that people have come does not mean they are willing to open the door to a stranger. Sometimes, they’d say: “I don’t know why I’m here, I don’t have any problems, my life is great.” Those were the people who often would be crying within five minutes. Some of the poems that spoke most to me at the moment of reading – preferences might vary with the mood: Blimey! The biggest is getting married. No one tells you when you’re young that it’s the most important decision you will make in your life. The Stiperstones are a range of hills in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It has become routine for me to make some sense of this bizarre situation we are all living through by sharing a poem: to see the beauty, love, nature and power of this world. The poetry I read often focuses on the positive and that is a great equaliser at a time when so much seems negative.

The AONB is a protected area that is recognised for its outstanding natural beauty. The Stiperstones are one of the most popular tourist destinations in the AONB, and for good reason! William is an entrepreneur, philanthropist writer and broadcaster with a distinguished record of support for the arts and literature. In 1992, he founded the Forward Prizes for Poetry and in 1994, National Poetry Day. Since September 2015, he has been chairman of the Board of Trustees at Somerset House. The Poetry Pharmacy is exactly what it states in the title. This short read contains poems from a range of authors, all dealing with different subjects, such as bereavement, obsessive love, self image and self acceptance and various others.

What it’s like to be prescribed a poem

From the start I was overwhelmed by people’s responses, not just to the idea itself and to the theatre, but to the ‘therapy’ session. There is a magical combination of things when someone comes in: they put their feet up, sounds outside are hushed; it is a non-threatening intimate space. I am, but I do too much. That’s my problem. Which is ironic because I sit there listening to people and saying, ‘You must go out for a walk!’
