About this deal

The only downside to protein bars is that they’re much more costly than shakes (gram for gram of protein) AND they contain more calories; a typical scoop of protein powder comes in at around 100 calories for 20g of protein, while most bars exceed the 200 calorie mark for the same amount of protein.

Lidl is known as one of the cheapest supermarkets in the UK (along with Aldi), and you love protein bars, AND you’re a bargain hunter, that’s great news. Why? These bars are one of the very cheapest available in the UK. You’d think that for that price, they’d be sub-par quality, but their imaginatively-named ‘Protein Bar’ is both high in protein AND low in calories. Now I’ll be honest with you, the taste and texture aren’t amazing, this reminds of the old skool protein bars of the mid-2000s that were so chewy you had to book an hour out in your calendar just to eat one. Well you’ve come to the right place; below I’ll review 30 of the most popular protein bars on the market in the UK and tell you which are the best for taste, cost and protein content, here we go;

Unleash Hell'...guys this is more like HEAVEN! The awesome Warrior Protein Bar protein bar in Salted Caramel Flavour!! With 20g protein per bar, this multi-layered sensation is a crunchy, chunky, candy bar lovers DREAM!! A bar with a nougat core, coated in whey crispies, with a salted caramel layer combining the two together, then DIPPED in delicious milk chocolate!! Grenade has always tried to level up their flavours and go for a ‘dessert’ style of bar, again a good range of flavours, I do have to say, they look rich! Around 23g of protein and averages at about 220 calories per bar, the macros are slightly better! USN – Trust range

As part of the Men's Health Sports Nutrition Awards, we enlisted a 200-strong panel of fitness enthusiasts and experts to test a range of market-leading protein bars, helping us to find those that deliver on both nutrition and flavour. I’m somewhat of a chocoholic and whilst on a healthy eating plan, the Cadburys and Mars of the world are off limits, I do need to work in a treat or two, preferably of the cacao seed nature. I’ve tried similar products with healthy, nutritional profiles that still offer the chocolate bar experience, but never have I been so convinced and satisfied, as by the Warrior. The Warrior Crunch isn’t exactly what the name suggests. There isn’t much ‘snap’ to it; the bars even describe themselves as having a triple layer of ‘gooey’ goodness. Crunch? Gooey? Which is it? The raspberry filling is definitely soft but decadently so; in much the same way as a luxury chocolate bar. I missed any crunch. But the opulence that this bar seems to unusually offer, means I found myself thinking that a box of these would make for a great present for an exercise fiend, amateur athlete or gym bunny; a birthday, Christmas, Mother’s or Father’s Day gift. Warrior CRUNCH bars are possibly the tastiest low carb, high protein bar ever to hit the market! A richly delicious, multi-layered, crunchy low-carb, high protein bar that is perfect any time of day. USN offers a lovely variety of flavours, that raspberry cheesecake sounds like a bit of me! But anyway, a little bit less protein in these bars, around 15g whilst still hitting about 250 calories so if protein intake is your goal then these may not be the best, not by a lot but you might opt for a more protein-dense treat. Product contains more than 10g/100g polyols: excessive consumption may cause laxative effects. Note: as with any supplement that you're using to help achieve your fitness goals – protein bars, powders etc. – remember they are just that, supplements, and you will always get more nutritional value from real foods.
