About this deal

One day I would wake from a sleep free of nightmares, walk down a street unafraid. Until then, I kept my flimsy dag- ger close and wished for the sure heft of Grisha steel in my palm. Then reality crashed in on me. This was how it ended? Without a fight? Without so much as a shot fired or a voice raised? A sob of pure rage and frustration tore free from my chest. With a sigh of relief, I turned onto the city’s main thorough- fare. At least now I knew where I was. Cofton still didn’t feel quite real to me. There was something raw and unfinished about it. Most of the streets were unpaved, and I always felt like the flat-roofed buildings with their flimsy wooden walls might tip over at any minute. And yet they all had glass win- dows. The women dressed in velvet and lace. The shop dis- plays overflowed with sweets and baubles and all manner of finery instead of rifles, knives, and tin cookpots. Here, even the beggars wore shoes. This was what a country looked like when it wasn’t under siege. Soon we would go farther, deep into the wilds of the Zemeni frontier. Maybe then we’d begin to feel safe. Later, Nikolai asks Mal to join the soldiers on a royal hunt, which would also help him mend his strained relationship with the First Army. To this, Mal reluctantly agrees. While Mal goes off to hunt, Nikolai lets Alina in on his plan of building a new ‘Hummingbird’ (the flying ship). This was to be the Prince’s escape plan if the worst came to pass. Nikolai tells her that he wants to keep his parents safe from the Darkling and, hence, would need two Squallers to help him build the ship. Alina says she can only ask the Grishas to volunteer, and in return, she also makes Nikolai promise to take Baghra along with him.

See the Grishaverse come to life on screen with the Netflix series, Shadow and Bone. Daring rogue Nikolai finally joins the fold in Season 2 -- covering explosive events of both Siege and Storm and Ruin and Rising -- streaming now! Mal laughed, but I noticed that he kept his hand on his pistol. The Pit was located in one of the less savory parts of Cofton, and we were carrying a lot of coin, the wages we’d saved for the start of our new life. Just a few more days, and we’d have enough to leave Cofton behind—the noise, the pollen-filled air, the constant fear. We’d be safe in a place where nobody cared what happened to Ravka, where Grisha were scarce and no one had ever heard of a Sun Summoner.I pushed the thought away. I might not be the Sun Summoner anymore, but I wasn't that sad little girl either. I'd find a way to be useful.

Amidst the pressure of building the Second Army, the murky royal politics, and the responsibility of being a Sun Summoner, Alina could feel the growing distance between herself and Mal. To somehow lessen the rift between the two of them, Mal and Alina decide to go to a ‘fortune-telling party’. Although they manage to unravel and enjoy themselves for the time being, their retreat does not end happily. When a chaotic outburst takes place amongst the guests at the party, the Apparat suddenly appears and manages to get hold of Alina alone. He offers Alina the chance to join his cult, and in return, he will provide her with valuable information on the third amplifier, the Firebird. Alina refuses him, and they are soon discovered by her guards. The Apparat, however, manages to escape before Tamar gets to him. He yanked me beneath a shadowed awning. I had a moment's panic when I thought he'd spotted trouble, but then his arms were around me and his lips were pressed to mine. I stiffened. Mal glanced over his shoulder. Slowly, he looked her up and down. “No,” he said flatly. “You don’t.”But as the truth of Alina's destiny unfolds, she slips deeper into the Darkling’s deadly game of forbidden magic, and further away from her humanity. To save her country, Alina will have to choose between her power and the love she thought would always be her shelter. No victory can come without sacrifice—and only she can face the oncoming storm.

When he caught sight of me, his face broke into a grin and he waved. The washerwomen turned to look and then exchanged glances of disbelief. I knew what they saw: a scrawny girl with stringy, dull brown hair and sallow cheeks, News was easy to come by in Novyi Zem, but none of it was good. Rumors had surfaced that the Darkling had some- how survived the battle on the Fold, that he had gone to ground to gather his forces before making another attempt on the Ravkan throne. I didn’t want to believe it was possible, I had to say something. And it makes you quite a tragic figure. Pretty girl, giant growth, you know."Mal was already headed up the stairs. “No, but he likes our money just fine. And we’ll be out of here in a few days.” I lashed out with the Cut and the creature burned away to nothing, but the next monster was on me in seconds. It seized me, and revulsion shuddered through my body. Its grip was like a thousand crawling insects swarming over my arms. Personally, I'm a firm believer in going into second books blind. I've found distancing myself from rumors and teaser chapters and blurbs make for a more enjoyable reading experience. I'd rather unravel where the story's going as it unfolds in front of me, than know bits and pieces ahead of time that might morph into unfounded and unmet expectations. So, that said, I didn't know much about the directionSiege and Storm was headed when I began the book, and I don't want to take that thrill away from you by revealing too much of the story. So, I'll just say... I love Siege and Storm more than Shadow and Bone. It's a second book so you can expect much drama, much conflict, much political intrigue, and moments that will tear your heart to pieces. And in those moments where it feels like your heart is being ripped piece by tiny piece from your chest, be prepared to say, "Please sir, may I have another?" Because seriously, it's just that good. Character Cast - Loved the new characters! All of them. Not just Sturmhond, though I've lost count of how many reviewers I've seen become Team Sturmhond. Also: Tolya and Tamar, and many more but some may be spoilers to discuss. Suffice it to say, although the series is dark and becomes darker, the unique mix of humor and political intrigue continues in this novel, and the characters, both new and old, really make the book what it is. ON THE DAY the Verrhader made land, the boy and girl stood at the rail together, watching as the coast of Novyi Zem drew closer.

Very well, thank you,” I replied in Zemeni. He didn’t return my smile, but gently patted my hand. Jes was definitely an odd one. World-building - I believe some of the criticism of Shadow and Bone was that it took too much from Russian culture--or the issue was with what was changed. Whatever the criticism, the czarist-inspired feel is still present, but the world has clearly expanded. There are more fairy tales, more adventures to be had, greater exploration of the bounds of both Alina and the Darkling's powers and their mutual connection, more parties and court politics, more on the Saints and the Apparat's shadiness, more on the Grisha and their power dynamics as well as those of the First Army... More, more, more. This world has become much more clearly developed, and it's all so wonderfully visually painted for you. Do I have to write it? I would have easily given this book 5 stars if it wasn’t for Mal and Alina. I just wanted to bang their heads and put amplifier on them that could give them power of sense. As I said they made middle part of the book exhausting.

I had to say something. And it makes you quite a tragic figure. Pretty girl, giant growth, you know.” He was a Kerch immigrant, and I'd gotten the distinct feeling he didn't like Ravkans. Or maybe he just thought we were thieves. We'd shown up two weeks ago, ragged and grubby, with no baggage and no way to pay for lodging except a single golden hairpin that he probably thought we'd stolen. But that hadn't stopped him from snapping it up in exchange for a narrow bed in a room that we shared with six other boarders.
