About this deal

Different lawns will have different height requirements so be sure to find out the recommended height for your grass blades.

Overall. I have to say that this is a well-priced grass seed that works well for gardens that are overshadowed by trees or the neighbouring buildings. It does take some time to get established, but grows well in the end and produces a nice, soft lawn that can be cut down fairly short. Pros Even the priciest grass seed costs significantly less than buying rolls of turf, but it does require more patience and work to create a lawn from seed than from turf. What is grass seed made from? As mentioned above, it’s better to use organic feeds on clay soils. And during the height of the Summer, it’s also recommended to use a liquid feed rather than a granular one. So, liquid seaweed lawn feed is the perfect option. Applying a liquid feed every 4 weeks, will not only help the soil but will also help the lawn turn greener in colour by making the grass blades more healthy.

Grass seed mixes that do well in clay soil are ones that contain perennial ryegrass, due to its extremely hardy nature, and fescues that root deep down in the soil, such as tall fescue. If your clay soils are also suffering from shade, combine this mix with one of our shaded mixes to give your shaded clay soil lawn the complete solution it needs to impress. So, what are you waiting for? It's time to finally master your clay soils!

Miracle-Gro’s multi-purpose grass seed is another fast-germinating option for both overseeding a damaged lawn, or starting off a new one. Providing you get the conditions right, that is. If the area is predominantly clay then I would recommend the IMPRESS: Clay Master. It is a specially blended grass seed mixture designed for clay and heavy clay soil conditions. The tall fescue component has a strong deep rooting system which not only allows it to penetrate your clay soils effectively but ensures a drought tolerant lawn, especially in soils that are prone to dryness. I sowed this seed (ClayMaster) at the start of March having followed all the advice e.g. moss killed, scarifier, top dressed etc) but didn't appreciate that March would be the wettest for 45 years. Some of the seed was inundated for 12-24hrs and all seed was very, very wet. Getting the right balance between hardwearing grass and a comfortable soft lawn isn’t easy; tough grass can be coarse, but softer grass easily wears out. A lot of first-time lawn seeders run into problems and often they can’t work out what exactly that problem is. The most common things that people do wrong are sowing seed when the weather is too cold, not protecting their newly sown seed from foot traffic, birds, and excitable pets, and trying to grow the wrong kind of grass for their soil type. One thing I’ve learnt by speaking to customers is that clay soil in the UK is very common. It’s also a very difficult soil type to get a great looking lawn.

Under perfect conditions such as a lot of sunlight, but not overly hot temperatures, and plenty of rain, grass seed can take between one and three weeks to germinate. If conditions are not as perfect as you’d like, and they often aren’t, you will probably have to wait longer to see results. Results can be truly impressive, as long as the instructions are closely followed to a tee. This certainly isn’t a grass seed that can be thrown over the ground with abandon, hoping for life to grow, but if you have the time and patience to suitably prepare the earth, it has the potential to elevate a bald garden to a fully-turfed green. Read our full guide How to sow a new lawn. Overseeding an existing lawn with IMPRESS: Clay Master Lawn SeedThere were one or two patches that didn’t grow as well as the rest of the lawn, but there are tons of reasons why this could be, such as birds feasting on seed in that area, the soil conditions, or simply due to human error when spreading the seed. I usually use a seed spreader for sowing lawns, but on this particular day, I forgot it and did it by hand. Raking the area, sowing the seeds, and then sieving on topsoil is all that is really required to encourage this Speedy Grass Lawn Seed to grow. It will need regular watering, but only enough to keep the seeds slightly damp – if the weather conditions are good, with some drizzle as well as sun, you may not even need to water that much all. Hi Diane, you should apply some compost and seed if there isn’t any grass left. These will only help to maintain a lawn rather than create one. Yeah anything that’s 100% organic is pet friendly.
