About this deal

Although I read most of his stories growing up, rereading them as an adult makes me realize how much I’ve learned from his characters and stories. Having had this on my shelf for probably over 10 years, and feeling as child that it was too daunting a read, being 444 pages, I really wish i had dipped in and out of it because it is truly magical! We celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, traditions and living cultures; and we pay our respects to Elders past and present.

Complete stories, extracts, rhymes and memoirs in four themed sections: Animals; Magic; Family, Friends and Foes; and Matters of Importance. Reading this gave me the desire to go back and read more of his children’s work, but even more than that, his more auto-biographical works such as Boy and especially My Year. An old wooden shed in the back garden, with a wingbacked armchair, a sleeping bag to keep out the cold, an old suitcase to prop his feet on and always, always six yellow pencils at his hand, was where Roald created the worlds of The BFG, The Witches, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and many, many more. In 1999 he became the first ever Children's Laureate and in 2013 he was knighted for services to illustration.

FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE 1997, small 4to, 260 x 200 mm, 10¼ x 7¾ inches, red boards, yellow lettered spine, pages: (4), 1-444. With four exciting sections: Animals; Magic; Family, Friends And Heroes; and, Matters Of Importance, this book introduces some of Roald Dahl's most popular characters, from the Enormous Crocodile to the Twits, from the Witches to the BFG, from James to Matilda.

The stories are lovely for both adults and children, the drawings are beautiful as always with Roald Dahl. It was here that Roald Dahl began to tell his five children made-up bedtime stories and from those that he began to consider writing stories for children. There is nothing quite like the names he has come up with, even if we don’t know what something looks like or how something tastes, the word(s) itself (themselves) portray the feel of the appearance, the flavor, the essence of it. Lavishly produced and illustrated in full-color, it features artwork by such prominent illustrators as Quentin Blake, Lane Smith, and Raymond Briggs.A selection of guest illustrators including Raymond Briggs and Ralph Steadman add visual variety to the extracts.

Personal tributes from some people who knew him well combine with excerpts from his longer books and full-text of some of his shorter works, including some items previously unpublished. He taught illustration for over twenty years at the Royal College of Art, of which he is an honorary professor. This tome of an homage dedicated to the great Roald Dahl contains excerpts from Dahl's best-loved fiction for children and his autobiographical material.

Four exciting sections - ANIMALS; MAGIC; FAMILY, FRIENDS AND HEROES; and MATTERS OF IMPORTANCE - introduce some of Roald Dahl's most popular characters, from the Enormous Crocodile to the Twits, from the Witches to the BFG, from James to Matilda. Roald Dahl's growing success as an author led him to meet many famous people including Walt Disney, Franklin Roosevelt, and the movie star Patricia Neal. The book includes a large volume of illustrations by Quentin Blake, with some specially commissioned for the project and some appearing for the first time in colour. Some of these samples are entertaining on their own but I do feel it helps to have an idea of the whole story when reading them.Gorgeous collection of Roald Dahl shorts, including an intro by his daughter Ophelia, perfect for bedtime. But being nearly two metres tall he found himself squashed into his fighter plane, knees around his ears and head jutting forward. Stories that I somehow missed during my childhood including The Enormous Crocodile, The Minpins and extracts from My Year were especially nice to come across. Dahl went on to create some of the best-loved children's stories of the 20th century, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda and James and the Giant Peach. That can make you see how your stories enriched my relationships, particularly the one between my father and me.
