About this deal

The screen itself is rated at 1000 nits so is still very bright. At 1920x 1080 pixels, the screen shows finely detailed images and is far better than any standard camera screen. You may wish to buy an external sunshade for the brightest days, though. DSLR and Mirrorless cameras may well be the popular choice for shooting video, but, there’s no getting away from the fact that they were originally designed to shoot stills.

Even if you buy the kit, there are other things you need to add. An SSD is one—and video footage gets big, so you'll want one with a lot of space. You can buy a standard one from SanDisk or the like and use the included caddy.

Introducing Atomos Cloud Studio

You can also get rid of all the menu items apart from timecode and audio meters while shooting so you can concentrate on the composition. Of course, you may already own all some of this kit, but if you don’t then your total investment could effectively be doubling the price of the Ninja V itself, if you go for high-quality and large-size SSD drives. Coupled with the proven Full Frame Canon EOS R5, this combination will propel content creators to a whole new level of production values. Coming later in 2021. Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. Read our editorial mission & see how we test. Ultimately the Atomos Ninja V enables you to shoot great video more easily and take some of the processing strain away from your computer.

A battery is one. Atomos doesn't include one; instead you just get a power supply so you can plug the Ninja into a wall outlet. That's fine for use in a studio, but you'll need a battery to work with it in the field. The contents of the standard edition, without the accessory kit, are shown below. To mount it to your camera or rig, the top and bottom of the unit has the ARRI 2-pin 3/8″ accessory mounts so you can buy the right connector to stop the unit twisting. To save space and support longer recordings, many cameras record compressed 4:2:0 8-bit video internally. If the camera is able to output video via HDMI, the quality can often be preserved in a 4:2:2 8-bit or 10-bit format. Ninja V+ can record more color information and immediately add value to your production with your existing camera rig. Additionally, if you’re shooting Log footage, the ability to bypass internal compression will offer the best possible dynamic range. Ninja V+ is designed to maximize the quality of your videos and allow you to extend every aspect of your creative vision. Does NOT come with a battery! Not even a baby one! Come on, guys... this is not a cheap product, surely you can throw in a small NP-F battery. The Ninja does some processing and enables a greater range of codecs, but that isn’t going to greatly improve the video quality or give you huge amounts of additional scope when it comes to grading. However, it does record at 4:2:2 rather than 4:2:0, so there may be a marginal improvement in the colour data, although I can’t see too much of a difference. The Atomos Ninja V does far more than just act as a preview screen; it enables the capture of clean HDMI video out from your camera, increased recording options, and so much more. Capture Apple ProRes RAW video with the Ninja V, and experience complete control over the video image. Benefiting from the ability to capture RAW video allows you to edit and colour grade footage without compromising the quality of the footage you have captured. Supports very large SSDs! I routinely attach 8TB Samsung QVO 870 SSDs to the monitor, and it works perfectly. Three years after launching the original Ninja V, Atomos has announced its successor is on the way in the form of the Ninja V+. The new device features roughly the same form factor as the original Ninja V, but uses a new ’stealth grey bezel’ and an updated chipset to record the highest quality video possible.

Experience RAW filming when paired with cameras like the Nikon Z6 II and Z7 II. Enjoy maximum dynamic range, colour accuracy and detail. With extra information contained within the RAW footage, you can easily manipulate the footage in post-production. The display is easily visible in even direct sunlight. If Sony would provide camera bodies with 1000nit displays, I would be soooo happy! One of the biggest benefits are waveforms, false color, vectorscope, focus peaking, instant zoom and it’s easy to use Atomos’ own HDR feature as well as viewing LUTs. You can load up to eight LUTs, and you can bake in the look if you want. Mirrorless cameras offer incredible video quality but by adding a monitor like the Atomos Ninja V, you turn them into far more usable video cameras. The larger screen is much easier to see, compose with and has tools to help you expose and focus correctly.

Comes with a AC/DC interface meaning you can power the camera via a DC5521 cable from either a D-Tap or DC5525/5521 output on a battery plate. Primarily the big upside of using the Atomos Ninja V is all that addition screen size. OK, camera screens are getting bigger but not 5.2-inches. Powered by a unique combination of AtomOS 11 and Atomos Cloud Studio, you can share with the person standing next to you or someone across the globe just as easily. The 5-inch touch screen dominates the front. It's a bright panel, 1000 nits at maximum, which improves viewing quality under bright light. It features a crisp 1080p resolution, and can be set to display waveforms, zebras, and focus peaking, as well as to apply a LUT preview when capturing with a Log profile.

The rear of the unit has a slot for a single Sony NP-F battery a 5200mAh battery will give two hours of continuous 4K/60p monitoring and recording. You can also power the unit up from the mains via an included adapter. Takes standard NP-F batteries (one of the most common alongside V-mount and Mini-V batteries on the market) The Atomos Ninja V display has amazing depth and vibrancy thanks to colour accuracy and 10-bit processing. The Ninja V has the added bonus of being able to be fully calibrated by the user. For this test, I used a selection of LUTs from BounceColour. Once loaded into the Ninja V, you can then select them for the monitor, and the effect is then applied to the footage. You can really make the most out of the Atomos Ninja V when pairing it with the ATOMX SYNC module. Creating a multi-camera sync network, allowing you to effortlessly synchronise your recordings with multiple cameras and sound sources.Tap the setting ICON, and you can set-up your recording options. It’s worth pointing out here that the Ninja V doesn’t update your cameras recording settings, so if your camera is set to 1080p, then that is the resolution that will feed through to the Ninja V. New additions and features are constantly being developed with the goal to provide filmmakers with their ideal video monitor. AtmosOS continues to be updated with more ProRes RAW capable cameras, along with other features. For example, the inclusion of a wider range of frame guides and the nine-grid overlay makes composing and creating social media content straightforward. The team at Atmos continue to make innovations and improvements to their firmware. The less than ideal form factor and handling of interchangeable lens cameras (ILC) have led many manufacturers to design handy and innovative solutions for video; from housings, mics, handles, and of course, monitors. What is the budget for your production? If it is a very small budget project, you may not have the scope for a lengthy post production process that includes editing, grading or effects. In this case H.265 may be well suited to your project, as when recording in either Rec.709 or Log with a LUT ‘baked in’, the files are unlikely to require color grading.
