About this deal

You can tell when pullets will start laying because their combs will start to turn from pink to a deep red. If brooding different sized chicks, the unit can be adjusted so that one end is lower than the other. Some growers pellets are medicated (with the same drugs found in medicated chick crumbs- see my note about medicated feeds above).

It is also fine to let a hen brooding chicks to eat chick crumb or growers, the same as the chicks, It won't do her any harm at all. Chicks vary in size, according to their parents – small chickens produce tiny chicks compared to some of the heavier breeds, and quail chicks are minuscule! When we hatch chicks artificially, day-old chicks don’t have a mother to teach them what’s good to eat, so how do they learn to feed? Growth rate is rapid until five weeks of age, thereafter it slows down and adult weight is achieved at about 50 days. But for baby chicks up to the age of about 5-6 weeks, I feed organic starter/grower which is 20% protein (mostly soy protein). Newspapers may seem a practical solution, but it is too slippery at first and can lead to chicks with splayed legs. When choosing your site to raise your chicks, bear in mind that they produce quite a bit of dust and mess.

Finisher Pellets may be fed for the last 2 weeks to birds being reared for meat to improve the fiinish. Once my chicks are fully feathered and off heat (at about five to six weeks old), if the weather isn’t too cold, I get them outside onto grass in a portable house and run that I can move daily. It is especially true indoors, where it is more challenging to secure a heat lamp, or you worry about fire hazards. There must also be electricity for the heat-lamp, and either a good natural light source or electric lighting.

Bear in mind, too, that wobbly little chicks grow surprisingly quickly into lively, energetic young birds and will need space to move around freely as they develop. They can have standard-size poultry grit when they reach sixteen weeks old, except for bantam sized ducks which can stay on chick grit because of their smaller size. Cold chicks huddle together, cheeping loudly, while too much heat causes them to move as far away from the lamp as possible. Ideally, this should be where the temperature is reasonably constant, without lots of comings and goings to cause fluctuations. Available as a plain product currently in the country side range which may be fed to all classes of poultry and ducks.
