About this deal

We’ll be focused on three core lines of budget US TV that look to offer up some of the best value: the A4K Series, the A6H Series, and the U6H Series. We found that just being 20 degrees off centre introduced gamma and colour shift with the screen washing out quickly the further you moved off-axis. cd/m2 (using a checker chart) and a peak brightness of 240 cd/m2 (nits) giving it an on/off contrast ratio of 4800:1. It delivers decent overall picture quality, with good black uniformity, but lacks advanced features like local dimming.

The UX isn't the only TV that got some love this year, as Hisense has also made considerable improvements to the rest of their ULED lineup. In dim viewing conditions, the black levels were satisfactory but with some noticeable lighter edges to the panel and even if slightly off-axis these black started to look milky and navy, losing the deep black look. Unfortunately, its image processing is significantly worse than on the higher-tier Hisense TVs, so there's visible digital noise when watching low-bitrate content from streaming platforms. I will add more when I have properly calobrated it but the first things I noticed were the inky blacks, how very bright the tv is even on 50 per cent. The built in speakers are passable, they are 2 8W bottom firing drivers that are a little flat, a little low on bass and a bit muted, so a sound bar or speaker setup would be a good addition, but with SPDIF, a 3.

The VIDAA system is intuitive to use and runs at a decent speed from button press to app opening and playing, plus there is Netflix, Prime Video and YouTube in 4K HDR. There’s a button that takes you straight to the Vidaa U home page, as well as buttons that give you quick access to some streaming services, including Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, and Freeview Play. They've recently started to add gaming features like variable refresh rate (VRR) support, so they compete with some other brands. I really enjoyed the look, even with 1080p content it still looked sharper and more vibrant than I’m used to, making for a worthwhile upgrade.

A trapezoidal protrusion below the bottom bezel houses the TV’s infrared sensor, far-field microphone array (in some regions), microphone mute switch, and Google Assistant LED. It's bright enough in HDR for a pleasant viewing experience, and just like the Hisense U8/U8K and Hisense U7K, it supports both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision HDR, although it doesn't support advanced DTS audio formats like those models do. Hisense makes use of a variety of different smart TV platforms, depending on the set you’re watching, including the third-party Roku and Android TV platforms.

With all that said and understood, the Hisense is a good LED LCD TV for a second room or kitchen and has some decent gaming features and input lag for those who want a bedroom panel for that use and some normal TV viewing. We are reviewing the 50-inch version of the A7G and the larger sizes in the UK use an IPS panel, while the 50-inch is a VA panel. As you can see in the greyscale results, we were able to get reference levels of accuracy and have gamma tracking perfectly to BT. The lack of absolute contrast is more obvious when viewing in dim surroundings and black crush is also more noticeable with tricky scenes, like the opening of John Wick: Chapter 3, where backgrounds lose shadow detail in the darker parts of the image.
