Antimicrobial activity of holy basil extract was evaluated by various authors. Aqueous extract of holy basil showed growth inhibition for Klesbiella, Escherecia coli, Proteus and Staphylococcus aureus while alcoholic extract showed growth inhibition for Vibrio cholerae. The alcoholic extract was also found to be active against multidrug-resistant strains of S. aureus that are also resistant to common beta lactam antibiotics. Holy basil essential oil showed good antibacterial activity against Bacillus pumilus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and S. aureus and higher content of linolenic acid in holy basil essential oil could contribute towards its antibacterial activity ( 26). In the dental literature, only one such study carried out by Agarwal et al. [2010] ( 26) is available in which antibacterial activity of various concentrations of holy basil extract was evaluated in vitro against Streptococcus mutans and they observed that at 4% concentration, holy basil showed the highest antibacterial activity. Unless, of course, you live in a big enough city with enough Thai restaurants to warrant a supplier bringing it in. The Best Substitute for Holy Basil

Within Ayurveda, the ancient system of medicine originating in India, the green-leafed plant has been used for thousands of years for its healing properties. Pregnancy or breastfeeding: Studies with holy basil may exclude pregnant or breastfeeding people. As a result, information on the safety and effectiveness of holy basil while pregnant or breastfeeding remains limited. Data on the safety and effects of holy basil in nursing infants is also limited. For this reason, take holy basil with caution. It’s always a good idea to speak to your doctor before using holy basil, particularly if you’re concerned about your health. Who should avoid holy basil? Also the metric world does not measure granulated sugar, let alone chopped up chilies as volume. It has invented scales for this purpose. Why would I want to transfer chili bits to a measuring cup, then try frantically to discern the level they reach, knowing fully well that if I give the measuring cup a little shake the level will be different.

Push the beef to one side of the pan, add a little more oil and add the garlic and chili mixture, then sauté until garlic starts to turn golden.

Red and Green Chilies: Bird’s eye is preferred as it’s what they use in Thailand. These beautiful tiny chilies are HOT! So be sure to adjust the amount to taste. You could also deseed them to make this dish milder. If you can’t find bird’s eye chilies easily where you live, Holland chilies or any other small chilies will work fine. Crank up the heat to high, and add the ground pork, breaking it up into small bits and allowing it to crisp up. Garlic Chili Paste: If you don’t have a mortar and pestle, you can finely mince the garlic and bird’s eye chilies. Alternatively, you could also use a mini blender and pulse until a coarse paste-like texture is achieved. Fezza, T.J.; Shelly, T.E.
