About this deal

Sort of related to that, but less talked about it, is how we enjoy gaming. If I’m going to devote time to playing games, I want a very high likelihood that I’m going to enjoy my time. I can’t risk four hours (or usually even two) on a game when I’m not overly likely to enjoy it. So, first up, that means I need a game I am going to enjoy even if I lose. Thus, gaming becomes less about winning and losing, and more about enjoying the experience. I am far from a Napoleonics wargaming and modeling expert but I have been trying to learn more in the past year in preparation for this.

The 2d10 seems an obvious attempt to avoid the swingy nature of Frostgrave’s d20. There were plenty of discussions about 2d10 versus d20 on the Frostgrave forum (at Lead Adventure). Therefore, while the foes that you will fight in The Silver Bayonet include ghosts, ghouls and goblins, those monsters are controlled in the game by a series of flowcharts–an AI for monsters–and your real opponent is your friend’s nation’s warband.

With such a vivid image in mind, the challenge lay in capturing the essence of a “stiff upper lip” in the face of overwhelming disaster.

Originally I liked the idea of the split activations in the turn but the playthrough did not seem as interesting as I first thought.Recruit new soldiers, face new foes, and explore the mysteries of the Carpathian Mountains in two new campaigns, one competitive and one for solo or cooperative play.

There are some decidedly Gothic adventures for you to dive into as you and another player (although you can take this to four if you like!) battle through the ruins of Castle Fier. It all culminates with a clash in the dank darkness of the castle as you battle over treasure and a threat that is watching from the shadows. Castle Fier - Starting With Solo/Cooperative Play My Japanese unit. We do not use different stats, but substitute bows for rifles and teppo for muskets. Then there is the fact it takes longer to reload a rifle than a musket. Is that reflected in the rulebook? McCullough, by his own admission, wasn't thinking that this was going to be the first expansion for The Silver Bayonet. There might not have even been an expansion had The Silver Bayonet not flown off the shelves and gone down well with the community. To that end, it seemed apt that McCullough went with a tried and tested format for his expansions that have also graced some of his other skirmish games.

And that’s to say nothing of the monsters lurking around the board. Most of the game’s supernatural happenings are triggered when you activate certain points of interest, called Clue Markers. They’ll often provide an advantage for completing the scenario’s objective, such as discovering an artifact you’re trying to secure, or granting a boon to your stats for the remainder. Other times, they’ll activate a flurry of monsters to descend into the fray with immediate aggression. The Silver Bayonetis a skirmish wargame of gothic horror set during the Napoleonic Wars. Each player forms an elite band of monster hunters drawn from the ranks of one of the great powers. Riflemen, swordsmen, and engineers fight side-by-side with mystics, occultists, and even those few supernatural creatures that can be controlled or reasoned with enough to make common cause. The game can be played solo, co-operatively, or competitively, with players progressing through a series of interlinked adventures with their soldiers gaining experience and suffering grievous wounds, and their units triumphing… or falling in the face of the shadows. It is a game of action and adventure, where musket and sabre meet tooth and claw. It's quite hard to talk too much more about what's included with Castle Fier. A lot of what I could say would end up being rather spoilerific so I'll try and keep it as general as possible.
