About this deal

Spain is a generally tolerant and progressive place for LGBT+ travellers. There are active LGBT+ communities and social venues, particularly in big cities. Same-sex marriage has been legal in Spain since 2005. Since 2007, transgender people are able to register under their preferred sex in public documents such as birth certificates, identity cards and passports without undergoing prior gender reassignment surgery. Spain does not recognise a third gender. Actually, identifying an official Guardia Civil police vehicle is not too difficult. You just need to familiarise yourself with a few things. Timeshare ownership is well established in Spain. There are respected companies, agents and resorts who operate legally and fairly. However, there are also unscrupulous companies who falsely claim to provide incentives.

These are the chaps you are going to come across most. Not only do they supervise areas like obtaining your NIE number and Residencia, they are also the traffic division (“Trafico”) who deal with all things transport related outside of towns. Spain and Portugal have also rolled out speed-triggered traffic lights. There are sensors in the road which recognise whether a passing vehicle is speeding – and if it is, a set of traffic lights further up the road will switch from green to red, halting the driver. There are no fines for this method of speed enforcement. The idea is to shame the driver into slowing down. Rules of the road You may need to show ID when buying goods with credit or debit cards. Your driving licence or a photocopy of your passport may be accepted, but they may need you to show your original passport. Alcohol laws and bansOnly use official registered or licensed taxis, or reputable transport companies you recognise. Licensing regulations differ across Spain and in certain cities pre-booking is required. Policía Municipal (also known as Policía Local or Guardia Urbana in some cities) in every town and city of 5,000 or more people, of which Madrid's is the largest force and Barcelona's is the second largest. Similar to other law enforcement agencies, Policia Local are armed as well. Policia Local also use their own distinctive marked patrol vehicles which usually say "Policia Local" with the towns name written on the side as well.

Laws and cultural differences Personal ID The Guardia Civil (Civil Guard) is the national gendarmerie force and therefore has a military status. It patrols the entire national territory (including highways and ports), except for those areas that belong to the National Police, enforces customs duties and investigates crimes therein (78,000). They operate from garrison posts that are called Casas cuartel ("home-garrisons") which are both minor residential garrisons and fully equipped Police stations. Answers to both the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Defence. If an accident occurs while mountaineering, canoeing, potholing or climbing, or if you become lost in the mountains and need mountain rescue, call: Possession of even a small quantity of drugs can lead to arrest and detention. Possession of large quantities will usually result in prosecution and a prison sentence. Illegal commercial parties in villas and private homes

As you would expect, the National Police deal with more serious crimes. They enforce and prosecute drug related crime; co-operate with international police forces; etc. Having said that, if you have a police related problem (for instance, you have been burgled) it is absolutely fine to ring the National Police, rather than your local Policia. You must carry 2 red warning triangles which, in the event of an accident or breakdown should be placed in front of and behind the vehicle. They should be at least 50 metres away from the vehicle in each direction. You must have a spare wheel and the tools to change it. If you get out of your vehicle during an accident or breakdown, or while waiting for the arrival of the emergency services, you must wear a reflective vest or you may face a fine. If you are walking along unmanned beaches, be aware that waves can come in further than expected and have strong undertows.

The uniformed service, the Armed Police Corps ( Cuerpo de Policía Armada) which became the basis of the current National Police in 1978, was a completely separate organization with a complement of about 50,000 officers, including a small number of female recruits who were first accepted for training in 1984. The Director General of the National Police Corps, a senior official of the Ministry of Interior, commanded 13 regional headquarters, 50 provincial offices, and about 190 municipal police stations. In the nine largest cities, several district police stations served separate sections of the city. The chief of police of each station was in command of both the uniformed and the plainclothes officers attached to the station. A centrally controlled Special Operations Group ( Grupo Especial de Operaciones—GEO) was an elite fighting unit trained to deal with terrorist and hostage situations. Parkers recommends buying a third party policy, as it’s normally a lot cheaper. According to Spain’s El Mundo newspaper, postmortem examinations have already been carried out on the bodies of the 13 people who died in Barcelona. DNA samples have been taken and dental examinations will follow.
