About this deal

One day Iris receives a reply, which, along with other events, pushes her to make dramatic life decisions. John and Sarah Crossan—biblical scholar and photographer, respectively—collaborate on this profound, radical work labeled by them as “a debate about ideas presented in and by images. But he can also wax poetic when describing the lunar landscape, the hard-edged horizon, the Earth hanging overhead, the scoured rock below. As August the 18th draws closer Ed's case is reported on the TV which means people realise who Joe has been visiting.

The descriptions are great for example when Aunt Karen's voice is described as "as hard as the stone in an apricot". Moonrise was published as a hardcover by HarperCollins on 25 July 2005, in Canada, [5] and 2 August 2005, in the US and UK. He dedicated the novel to "Cordwainer Bird", the pen name Harlan Ellison uses when he does not want to be associated with a television or film project. As we approach the ¼ mark in the novel, we bounce back and forth as Joe is working in Texas, fixing up an old car on the promise of getting a job with a local diner. All of these characters added something to the story, no matter how badly you wanted to hate them or love them. They tended to be common four-letter first names for the male characters and slightly better, but still common female character names. Spare and sad and angry, but Moonrise is also laced with nuggets of happiness thanks to how beautifully the brothers' relationship i The sex scenes in the book are gratuitous at best, and the females, with rare exceptions, are more submissive than you might expect, especially those who appear to have some power in the book. Narrating in image-rich free verse that packs an emotional punch, Kasienka describes what life is like for a new arrival while also exploring universal themes. Don’t miss Sarah Crossan’s other irresistibly page-turning books Toffee, One, Apple and Rain, and The Weight of Water.

Rather than burdening Joe with a strict narratorial voice and pages of text to put words to his complex thoughts and feelings, using free verse instead gives Joe the space to think, talk and feel normally, in fragments, through associations and with memories, and maintain a steady characterisation all the while.

Moonrise is written in an alternating third-person limited narrative, with the exception of the prologue, which is written in a third-person objective perspective. These main characters are known as Brambleclaw, Squirrelpaw, Tawnypelt, Crowpaw, Stormfur and Feathertail. Yet at the same time they are both grateful for the plentiful supply of milk in the fridge as well as the clean clothes in the closets. Guys, this book…I don’t even think I’ll be able to talk about it and give it the justice it deserves, but I’ll try.

And while I thought that after falling in love with One, reading another novel by this author's hand I wouldn't be quite as impressed by her use of verse as I had been the first time around, I couldn't have been more wrong. As we approach the halfway mark in the novel, Joe has to ask his brother once and for all whether or not he did the crime he has been charged with and Ed is furious with him and refuses to see him for days, which Joe ends up spending with Nell. Joe%E2%80%94and even Ed%E2%80%94are sympathetic characters, and readers may shudder at memories of their mother%E2%80%99s neglect and the guilt-by-association Joe experiences as a relative of a convicted felon and death-row inmate. However, his sister and aunt have arrived and with the exception of his mother, the family are together and will be until the end.

While still relying on "crazy" people, and lovers who consistently pick career over love, it has an interesting position on the moon vs earth argument. Things are complicated though as Joe learns Nell’s father is the warden of the prison which upsets things between them but they manage to work through it. The Japanese, for example, are the threat, as they were to many in the ‘80s with their multiple investments in U. Joe is determined to spend those last weeks with his brother, no matter what other people think … and no matter whether Ed committed the crime. Then the book jumps to present day where Joe has moved down to be near to Kirkland Farm where Ed is still on death row but has finally been given his date for execution!
