About this deal

Eventually, the government will be unable to ignore public clamour for a referendum on the monarchy’s continuation. Constitutional reformers who demand an elected upper house, or electoral reform, are often missing one of the main fault lines in our political system: founded on monarchy, we are still governed using the outdated toolkit of a monarchy, regardless of whether or not it is the King himself who wields power. Sadly, the author neglected to mention the London School of Economics’ massive public consultancy on this issue which happened in recent years and managed to get a lot of interest.

Asking a royal sycophant to read this would be like asking a devout Christian to read The God Delusion.Reading this book will give you the confidence to speak up, and to understand that we, the British people, (and I must say, those in the land of my parents), deserve a fairer society. Apparently he is guardian of our constitution - but we're also told he wouldn't dream of interfering in politics. On the question of government power, Smith likewise assumes that the existence of a strong executive is at odds with British values. Too often we Republicans get stuck hit with the usual freak examples of presidencies, usually from the US, Russia and occasionally France.

My only wish is that the author will produce a cheat sheet of all the stats and arguments summarised and ready to either draw on - when doing demonstrations or in discussions on the streets - or, better still, commit to memory. Although he is committed enough to the republican cause to lay down his freedom for it, there is something not altogether serious about the book he has produced. Furthermore, if those who decide the allocations of the real and unreal are cruel, mad or colossally wrong, what then? They aren't accountable to anyone, and yet between them they are privy to more government secrets than many cabinet ministers. But due to their protections from Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, yet again the whole picture is not easy to obtain.Royal Consent laws allow for senior Royals access to legislation at the drafting phase to make sure they don’t compromise their private interests.

As a history enthusiast, he says, he wishes it were possible to take in the palace in all its splendour, not just the few rooms the monarch has condescended to leave unlocked. To give Smith the benefit of the doubt, it could be argued that the general public, at which this book is aimed, would quickly lose interest in a work clotted with centuries-old theories. an unwritten constitution is not as flexible as we think, and a written one is much more flexible than we think. I think this helped dispel a common straw man argument hurled at Republicans that we disdain our history and have no interest in people looking into it. The dust jacket, with its silhouette of St Edward’s Crown upturned, gives it the appearance of a lost Sex Pistols album.

This is a book that is bound to upset and anger monarchists, but at the same time, I think there are valid republican criticisms of it to be made. Smith counters this argument brilliantly in essence showing that there is a great difference between being actively in favour of something and passively being ok with it continuing. Smith believes that monarchy’s failings are so self-evident that it is unnecessary to treat it seriously as a system of government. Abolish the Monarchy: Why we should and how we will does exactly what it says on the tin: delivers an invigorating polemic on why the British monarchy can and should be done away with. I hope that the monarchy is abolished soon but I don't share the author's view that it will happen anytime soon.
