About this deal

My daughter may not have loved it quite so much but it had provoked thought - I suspect she will continue to be intrigued by it. A Child of Books acknowledges the thrill of scary stories, the excitement of adventure narratives and the enchantment of fairy tales. I think it's a nice book and a nice sort of ode to reading but it just didn't have as much appeal to me as it seems to have with other reviewers. In this inspiring, lyrical tale about the rewards of reading and sharing stories, a little girl sails her raft "across a sea of words" to arrive at the house of a small boy. Jeffers and typographic artist Winton collaborate on a hymn to the power of imagination, in which witty pen-and-ink drawings meet manipulated blocks of type, composed of passages from children's classics.

It is a lovey story and very focused on a love of books, which is something that we both hope to instill into our child. Combining elegant illustrations by Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston’s astonishing typographical landscapes , this is the perfect picture book for Christmas. His first picture book - A Child of Books - reached number five on the New York Times bestsellers list and won the Bologna Ragazzi award as well as being shortlisted for The Irish Book of the year award and the Good Reads readers choice award. C., MoMA NYC and Stanford University, among many others, all hold his artist’s books in their permanent collections.Oliver Jeffers is the author-illustrator of many books for children, including Once Upon an Alphabet, which won a Boston Globe - Horn Book Award, and Lost and Found, which was a Nestlé Children's Book Prize Gold Medal winner. Jeffers and Winston's mixed-media artwork, an inventive combination of watercolor, pencil, and digital collage, elicits strong notice from readers. Interesting detailed drawings that could be great conversation starters for younger children, but I think this treasure is the PERFECT gift for the older (teen and up) book lover. The story is delightful, but looking for words from well known classics which form the pictures is also fun (eg words from Shelley's Frankenstein form the monster) A celebration of the imagination that knows no boundaries. Altogether, Bookwagon suggests that A Child of Books is a reading experience that merits being loved and shared.

The very clever pictures though are when a shape is formed just from pieces of text, such as a whole cave or a monster made up of lots of text printed on top of itself, a whole sea of words. In this video from Walker books, Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston discuss their new book, A Child of Books. This experience has been fantastic primarily for the children, the school and also for me (professionally). Bronnie is so lovely with the boys and we also felt that having a man enthusing about the books set a great example.New York Times best-selling author-illustrator Oliver Jeffers and fine artist Sam Winston’s lyrical picture book inspires readers of all ages to create, to question, to explore, and to imagine.
