If you were a princess, which life would you rather have? Living in a tower or going on adventures? The characters. In my opinion, a book is only as good as its characters. And these ones were fun. It is a change of pace from the normal fairy tale stories. The author does a great job of creating a story that is interesting and different. The reader wouldn't get the plot of the book by looking at the cover.
