About this deal

The novel describes the origins and events of the Russian Revolution, interwoven with the experiences of Arthur Ransome, then a journalist in Russia. He also has close contact with people working for the British government and must decide where his loyalties lie. How anybody survived the war on the eastern front I don’t know so his story is exceptional and truly amazing. I'm not sure of the survival rates for machine gunners, which was Koschorrek's specialty, so when I was reading I just sat back and marveled as he dodged endless waves of T-34s and mortars, or in the most ridiculous scene, manages to keep one step ahead of the Russians by stealing a pony.

Later, the horror and confusion of fighting in the streets of Stalingrad are brought to life by his descriptions of the others in his unit, their differing manners and techniques for dealing with the squalor and death. Wow, what a brutal war, fighting on that Eastern front in sub zero temperatures must have been horrific for any man, must read for any History/WW2/ War reading enthusiasts. Korochorrek makes only a fleeting reference to German War crimes committed by the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front; he suggests that both sides killed POWs and that Germans did some looting.

In Gunter Koschorrek's WW2 memoir "Blood Red Snow", Koschorrek claims to have personally witnessed the aftermath of Soviet soldiers massacring Russian civilians in German occupied territory. This memoir is particularly close to me because my father also fought for the Germans on that violent Eastern Front. It is some months before he regains his journalist status, and meanwhile there is civil war in Russia.

The truth is, in each one of us, the line dividing right and wrong meanders, blurs, and at times disappears altogether. Scholarly emphasis with especially strong holdings in Native American Studies, Art, Music, History, Natural Science, Math, Poetry and Languages etc. The diary went missing, and it was not until he was reunited with his daughter in America some forty years later that it came to light and became Blood Red Snow. It may be that Koschorrek's diary was a truthful account of the man's experience at the time it was written. He describes the horrendous treatment committed by Russian soldiers against their own Russian civilians who they falsely accused of harboring Germans. Sometimes we discover new information that changes what we know about an object, such as who made it or used it. Historical figures featured in the book include Rasputin, Vladimir Lenin, Lev Trotsky and the secret agents Robert Lockhart and Sidney Reilly. Wounded 7 times, you get to follow a plain, unassuming mudslogger into the deepest penetration of the USSR and back out.Even the translator was apparently British, with an abundance of British slang peppered throughout the book. Bir daha böyle şeyler yaşanmaması için fazla iyi niyetli bir dilek dilemekten başka elimden başka bir şey gelmiyor maalesef.

The Eastern Front was by far the most vicious and awful front of the war, and so his descriptions of Stalingrad and Bagration are amazing in how unlikely his survival seems to be. He give a vivid sense of the sheer horror and hopelessness which ensues when when infantry, devoid of cover and heavy weapons, are overrun by tanks. Given that this is also the (at least to my knowledge) so far only description by a German soldier of massacres committed by Soviet troops against Soviet civilians, I consider skepticism to be very appropriate. The diary went missing and it was when he was reunited with his daughter in America some forty years later that it came to light and became Blood Red Snow. Rather, according to the author, most believed they were fighting a patriotic war for the benefit of their homeland.
