About this deal

As we’ve seen before, The Glenlivet isn’t afraid to have some fun with its whiskies. The last few years have seen the release of each of its Alpha, Cipher, and Code expressions, which were released ‘blind’ – that is, without any cask information or tasting notes. People were encouraged to use their senses fully and try to unravel the mystery themselves, with Master Distiller Alan Winchester standing by to drop hints and help answer questions. Overall: If it was up to me, this would be #1 or 2 in the series. It’s soft and nice enough, but feels like a downgraded version of Glenlivet’s amazing 18 year old. 7 No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. Palate: Very sweet, almost candied, with a softly oily texture and sensation of richness without much weight. There’s some light cinnamon candy, orange peel, and underripe pineapple fading to a warming, sugary, gently acidic finish. It’s a fun textural experience, but I’m left wishing for a little more flavor.

In just two years after the act, the number of licensed distilleries doubled and legal whisky production rose from two million to six million gallons a year. Glenlivet was so prestigious that it gave its name to the whole region, now known as Speyside. To help preserve his brand, George Smith’s son, John Gordon Smith, applied for sole rights to the name, which were granted in 1884 but allowed other producers to hyphenate it with their own names eg. Glenfarclas-Glenlivet, which is still seen today, though very rarely. Which is why the original is known grandly as THE Glenlivet to differentiate itself from all those hyphenated Glenlivets.

The full tasting notes and cask information will be revealed later this year, which will enable drinkers to fully uncover the expertly crafted tasting notes contained within The Glenlivet Spectra. Palate: Very creamy, with loads of spiced apple sauce and a touch of clove-studded orange. Wine-poached pears are drizzled with toffee sauce and crumbled spiced biscuits.

The Spectra experience feels tailor-made for a pandemic. Even if you are totally alone, it makes for a convincing replica of drinking with a strange, somewhat demanding friend. The male voice actor chosen to narrate the “multimedia experience” has the mildest touch of brogue and otherworldly kind of serenity, kind of like a Scottish Brian Eno. I liked him immediately, complying happily with his directions to use headphones for the best experience, and hoping that my decision to split a set of airpods with my husband wouldn’t ruin whatever Brian had in store. We poured our whiskies, huddled around the iPhone like moths to a cold, cold flame, and tapped the button for Spectra No. 1. In short: mission accomplished – these are all definitely Glenlivet, but they are all very much their own drams. From zingy to smoky to rich and toffee-laden, it’s a demonstration that with a few tweaks here and there in the whisky-making process can lead to a very different end result.Finish: A burst of mint and menthol is washed away by cream and apple sauce. Hints of charcoal and char build, along with mint. These were namely Alpha, Cipher, Code and Enigma (a US exclusive), and were designed to keep whisky connoisseurs guessing as to what they were savouring. Normally when we write about new releases from well-known distilleries, it’s all about the cask. Our customers want to know as much as possible about how their whisky has been aged: Were the casks first fill or refill? Were they made with European or American oak? What did the casks hold before? Bourbon? Rum? Marsala? Sherry? What kind of sherry? From which bodega? Were they recharred? And most importantly, how long did the whisky spend in barrel? Nose: Unexpectedly soft and aromatically floral (think roses), though there’s a definite herbal tang too, like aloe vera gel and cucumbers. Delightful and unusual.

Nose: Orchard fruit wonderland. Apples, pears, and rich toffee. There’s an artificial sugariness like cotton candy too. Autumnal. Oh, SPOILER ALERT: if you don’t want to know anything about the whiskies, jump to the bottom of the post and ignore my tasting notes. The Glenlivet Spectra As well as being sold as a single malt, Glenlivet was much in demand by blenders. Blended whisky was taking off in the 19th century, most notably by Edinburg merchant Andrew Usher with his OVG (Old Vatted Glenlivet) which was launched in 1852 and had The Glenlivet as a principle component in the blend. By the 20th century the vast majority of the distillery’s production was going for fillings but in the 1970s Glenlivet once again began to market itself as a single malt, especially in the lucrative US market. Probably the most spectacular of the Spectra trio is bottle no.3, introduced by Jenna Murray, The Glenlivet’s US ambassador.

Alan Winchester explained that, “Given the mysterious nature of the Glenlivet Spectra, we aimed to ensure each flavor was distinct and recognizable. I hope whisky lovers enjoy exploring the wide spectrum of flavours within the Glenlivet Spectra, as much as we enjoyed crafting them”. Complete tasting notes and cask details will be revealed later this year, but you’ve still got plenty of time to try the whiskies and work out the mystery for yourself. The Glenlivet releases new limited edition containing a trio of mystery single malt Scotch whiskies that push the boundaries of traditional whisky tasting. Nose: A pronounced yet not overpowering smoky aroma rises from the glass, hinting at asphalt and petrichor. Up close, there’s a toasty, salty smoke character underpinned by vanilla bean and grilled pineapple.
