There’s also a little shutter lag to the TCL 10 Pro camera. It’s only around a third of a second, but this is noticeable when comparing directly to phones from some of the better-known names. However, Nxtvision is more than a behind-the-scenes technology — it’s also an app inside the 10 Pro that allows you to tune the appearance of the panel to your liking. When Nxtvision visual enhancement is on, contrast and colors are adjusted in real time to take advantage of the screen’s wide color gamut. A separate SDR-to-HDR option allows you to get non-HDR content up to spec, though to my eyes, this setting doesn’t make a world of difference. Occasionally it amounts to a slight-but-appreciated saturation boost, while other times it adds a little too much punch to intentionally-dim or muted scenes. Elsewhere, the AI seemed wholly unable to balance brighter elements, such as the pure white petals of some lilies, making them look like weird garden lamps. And while the 24MP selfie camera takes reasonably crisp shots, it too seems to struggle with bright spots, like the early evening sky or the sun shining off this writer’s (admittedly pale) head. The TCL 10 Pro also supports 18W fast charging, which it claims can get you from 0 to 50% in 35 minutes. In our own day to day usage, we observed that half an hour of charging with the battery at 27% yielded a 37% gain.
Close-up indoor food pictures with reasonable natural lighting look quite appetizing at first glance, but there was a tendency to pump up the reds and greens to an unnatural degree. On a couple of occasions the AI algorithm couldn’t make its mind up whether it was taking a food shot at all, and kept flipping between two modes, revealing an unwitting flip-book illustration of the unnaturalness of this effect. Video capture tops out at 4K resolution, 30 frames a second. And, unusually, there are no 60fps capture modes, even at 1080p or below. But is it actually better? The TCL 10 Pro scores 1573 in Geekbench 5, compared to the Xiaomi Mi Note 10’s 1714.
This is no great surprise when companies such as Huawei and Samsung have made far more high-end phones. The development has justified spending big on optimising depth-mapping algorithms, for example. We encountered another glitch when we got to reviewing a bunch of our photos, with around half a dozen out of 70 or so shots inexplicably orienting in portrait when we quite clearly shot them in landscape.
The 10 Pro has a 4,500mAh battery that should easily get you through a full day. In our battery drain test, which streams HD video over Wi-Fi at full brightness, the phone lasted 11 hours and 29 minutes. With more conservative use, you should be able to get a few more hours of screen time.The macro camera does let you shoot ultra-close shots such as this; but the results can be disappointing Relatively low-end camera hardware doesn’t quite do justice to the texture of these petals and the stamen detail Those willing to spend a little more might also want to consider the PocoPhone F2. It comes with a Snapdragon 865, plus a far more powerful processor than either the TCL 10 Pro’s or Xiaomi Mi Note 10’s. The Google Pixel 3a XL and Xiaomi Mi Note 10 are considerably better in this respect. It’s no disaster for the TCL 10 Pro’s camera, though, since it’s able to render better shadow detail than the Samsung Galaxy A51. Contrast is predictably superb, motion handling is excellent, colours are vibrant and top brightness is sufficient for decent clarity on sunny days.
