About this deal

What would you do if you found over quarter of a million pounds stuffed in a suitcase in your recently deceased father's house? She went back to University, studying English Literature part-time whilst the children were at school.

When Caroline’s father in law passes away and someone has to go back to the house to find his cat, she rises to the challenge. Otto Wagner, left a huge house and farm estate in Southern Bavaria to a British Army Surgeon who saved his life. When three members of a family come into a substantial amount of cash on the death of their father, the decisions they must make test their bonds, their marriages (in two cases), their friendships and their memories of how life has affected them in the past as they each seek to get the future right. One had stomach pains, another earache and another who was being very abusive towards everyone and to be fair was in much pain, was enduring a terrible boil in the lower middle of his back. I love her books - they somehow manage to be at once gentle, poignant and emotionally powerful stories and this one was no exception.

Nathan can’t be trusted with money, as the others all know; he’s desperate to get his hands on some (or all) of the cash. My next two hours were spent cleaning him up and determining what injuries had been sustained to his body.

In the beginning I could relate to the characters on a human level, despite it being very frustrating to read as an accountant.

The plot centers on the unexpected death of Tony, their father, and how they deal with the very unexpected revelation of a suitcase full of cash. She went back to university to study English Literature whilst the children were at school, and then tried her hand at writing novels herself. My only slight criticism would be that it was so heavily focused on the money, there wasn't much else in the way of plot so I found it repetitive in places. Many are unjustified but are settled out of court because defending such claims usually is more costly than settling.

The characters are engaging enough, but they don’t actually start the story about ‘the inheritance’ of the title until halfway through the book by, which time I wasn’t really that bothered what they did with it!

Although this is an intriguing, well-written and enjoyable read, I really didn’t like the characters that much. On the way out to the car park, I grabbed a quick coffee from the vending machine in the hope of a caffeine boost. Once lanced, his demeanour changed immediately from being aggressive to being apologetic and grateful. Nathan cant be trusted with money, as the others all know; hes desperate to get his hands on some (or all) of the cash. But I was heartened to find that friendship wins out in the end, and throughly loved the dynamics between everyone all the way through.
