The real gang existed from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. The tv show takes place from the end of WWI to the beginning of WWII. However, the creator of the series, Steven Knight, has confirmed that it will take 7 seasons to tell that story, and Peaky Blinders season 5 is the most recent season of the show to air on the BBC. The show has changed the time period in which they existed somewhat, instead of beginning the gang in the early 1900s and continuing it through the beginning of WWII. The characters are also fictionalized, but the gang itself did exist and wore many of the same fashions that are popular in the show. What Are The Hats Called In Peaky Blinders? Get the CapFashionably dressed, they were named after the weapon they used in fights: the peaks of their flat caps into which had been sewn safety razors and which were slashed across the foreheads of their opponents, causing blood to pour down into their eyes and blind them.” In the show, it is suggested that the gang got their name because they sewed razor blades into the brim of their flat caps, headbutting opponents during fights and sometimes blinding them. While this does play out in the show, this isn’t based on historical reality. Billy Kimber is Thomas Shelby’s main foe in the tv show. However, even though Shelby didn’t exist, Kimber actually did. In real life, Kimber was a violent gang leader who died as a successful businessman, using his ill-gotten gains to fund a legitimate business. Aunt Polly Murphy has admitted that Peaky is “working within the limitations of the gangster genre and things are heightened”. But Knight insists he is more interested in the scars – particularly the emotional ones – than the violence itself. “The biggest example is the violence of the first world war, the consequence of which carries on through six series,” he says. “It’s ugly, so we try to depict it as ugly.”

The elephant in the blood-spattered room is violence. Peaky Blinders is brutal in the grand, blood-letting tradition of on-screen gangsterism. When Arthur announces that the jazz club is under new management, he does so while holding the limp body of its outgoing manager, whose face we have just watched him destroy with a broken wine bottle. In 2018, the show was credited in the UK with boosting the popularity of the baby names Arthur and Ada (Ada Thorne is Tommy and Arthur’s sister). And yet, Carl’s research has shown it is highly unlikely these gangsters ever used razor blades in their caps and that the name probably just came from the peaked hats they chose to wear.
