You'd be forgiven for thinking that such a detailed account of this could be boring as I've read it written badly in such books as Kevin Bridges last few chapters but Romesh is skilled at feeding you the interesting facts. It's helps (sorry Romesh) that his path was bloody hard and even though you know he made it you still feel yourself rooting for him. At the age of 9, Romesh Ranganathan delivered his first ever stand-up set at a Pontin's holiday camp talent competition, smashing the other competitor, a young girl playing the kazoo. The police took it seriously and got a full statement from me, then said they’d find this person and take action. They eventually located the guy’s house and spoke to him. He was so scared that the police told me it was probably overkill to press charges, and asked if I would be satisfied with a letter of apology. I said that would be fine; if anything, it would be nice to get a letter. And you learn throughout this book how important family is to him. He writes with poignancy about hard times in his childhood, and with his own wife and children whilst he was a struggling comedian closer to modern day. He remains so grateful for the people who have loved and supported him throughout which is lovely to read.

Romesh Ranganathan to host BBC Three chat show". Comedy.co.uk. 15 March 2017 . Retrieved 24 March 2017.I can barely believe it myself but I’ve written a book. It’s called Straight Outta Crawley and it tells the story of how my childhood messed me up just enough to make me a comedian. From family issues, to being … We've been able to call everyone from Hollywood stars like Cate Blanchett to Internet sensations like Zoella a local resident but nobody has an allegiance as strong as Romesh, who hasn't lived anywhere else in his life. Romesh’s stand-up comedy is good but his memoir is not a transcript of his stage show. If you are looking for humour or jokes to repeat to friends, this is NOT a book for you. Straight Outta Crawley is a story told in the fashion of a first date. Romesh is amusing and frank, for example… I enjoyed reading it but marked it down a notch as some of the stories I had heard before. Harsh? Maybe

Gradually the club started to fill. The people looked terrifying – comedy connoisseurs who were going to hate everything I was doing. I started my set using my Sri Lankan accent. My plan was to reveal partway through that I don’t actually have a Sri Lankan accent. I imagined this would lead to the audience collapsing in fits of laughter, before I was carried out on their shoulders. In his Straight Outta Crawley book, the 42-year-old tells the story of the first gig he prepared for, held in a basement underneath a café. Romesh’s docs-comedy ‘Just Another Immigrant’ is to air on SHOWTIME in the US on Fridays from 8th June at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The 10-episode, half-hour series is a comedic docu-series that follows Romesh Ranganathan as he uproots his entire family … Ranganathan, Romesh (30 March 2019). Retrieved 19 November 2015. Again in his Straight Outta Crawley autobiography, he details his first ever attempt at stand up as a child on holiday at the local Pontins. I have no idea how it’s racist. This person just heard “ragamuffin”, made an association with Jamaican patois and took that to mean the guy was being racist, which I think in itself might be quite racist. Suddenly the bouncers came up and grabbed the guy to throw him out.
