About this deal

I've read stories of crackly, skipping, dust-ridden, fingerprint-ridden slabs of junk leaving this pressing plant. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

This involved consulting a few of the band's friends as to what they thought the best release would be. BirdsEye fish fingers, Heinz baked beans and chips (from the chip pan, slightly overdone), accompanied by a mug of tea and served on a wobbly wooden coffee table to a backdrop of a Grundig Colour TV showing the end credits of "The Changes" (hence the pylon reference)? One of the most popular bands to emerge from the English punk rock scene of 1977; The Jam had a phenomenal impact on pop music and wider youth culture. As a nice change to some of my other (audio) critical reviews, I'm pleased to finish this by saying, well done Universal Music.

Not only are all the dynamics fully retained in this wonderful new remaster, but there has been a careful amount of re-equalization to correct from the midrange-heavy remaster from 2000. Every time I purchase a CD over the last 10+ years, my first concern is if it's going to be blasted so loud that most of the dynamics are squashed out making it painful to listen to. Got this on vinyl as soon as I heard it was out in 1980, it reflects a more expansive and confident band, using horn section, backward tapes and heavy on the Rickenbacker approaches, that give the the whole set a swagger as it paces about the room with assured self belief a plenty. There are plenty of wonderfully catchy hooks and great songs that made me think The Jam's overblown and overrated reputation may not be entirely exaggerated. In their short career, along with the Sex Pistols, The Clash, and Buzzcocks, they influenced a generation with their music, style, politics and inspiration. Taking creative direction from a wide sphere of influences – The Who, Dr Feelgood, The Kinks and Motown to name a few, they achieved 18 consecutive Top 40 singles in the UK (including 4 number 1s) - they had a fanatical following, their singles entering straight in the top 10, or number 1 in some cases.

We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. This was punk-pop of the highest mark, and it was "Pretty Green" that caught me off guard, the bass riff urging everyone to dance. I must say that I bought it because of the convenience rather than the extra tracks on disc 2, so I cannot really comment on it. With extensive finagling I was able to extract the record from the way-too-tight inner sleeve without resorting to Caesarean surgery! From my readings, they will make a vinyl record out of anything - your pubescent brother's farts recorded on a Maxwell cassette can be made into an "180-gram audiophile record".
