The vampire itself is a physically representation of the past, and how as time moves on, society begins to be scared of what has happened previously, shunning it. It is clear that this is woven throughout An Education in Malice; Laura is new, to Carmilla's already-earned position under their teacher, their blossoming relationship is a threat to the concrete one formed between Carmilla and De Lafontaine. I ADORE Gibson's approach to this retelling, much like her previous work. This was my Gothic novel DREAMBOAT of a book.

Evil Genius: Dracula is fascinated with learning more about not just his own vampirism but human intellect. He has, over his long immortal life, carefully sought to learn and improve as much as he can and now is a genuine genius. He intentionally surrounds himself with intellectual minds in a search for more and more knowledge.

Gibson. well, that was a book alright. i cannot say it was good but i also cannot say it was bad, which is weird for me after reading a Gibson book because it's usually definitive knowing how clean the plot is and how beautiful the writing style is. Gibson has a magnificent prose, everything she writes is evocative, poetic, feral and dense. It's always multilayered, full of lush, tension, brutality and intention. You coaxed that tenacity out of me and broke it down in your hands, leaving me on your work table like a desiccated doll until you were ready to repair me. Crazy Jealous Guy: Dracula is very possessive of his harem despite the seemingly nice demeanor he initially gives off. This is because he views them less as people and more as possessions and has even gotten rid of any brides who he believes have outlived their usefulness. I also don't feel that I got anything I was promised. I was told this was a vampire story, but them being vampires doesn't really effect anything. I was told this was a Dracula retelling, from the perspective of one of his brides, and yet any elements of the original are nowhere to be found. Including Dracula himself. They could have been anyone or anything and it wouldn't have made a difference. A Dowry of Blood is a glittering tale of obsession, seduction and power as told through the letters of Dracula’s first bride, Constanta. Asshole Victim: As a vampire, Constanta only targets the most odious of victims to feed on, including general jerkasses like guys who will spit on a beggar or sexually harass a woman by grabbing her arm.

I STILL CANT GET OVER THE FACT THAT HE TOLD THEM ALL THAT THEY WERE LIKE SIBLINGS AND THEY ALL WENT ALONG WITH IT IT WAS WEIRD HE ALWAYS CALLED CONSTANTA HIS WIFE THEN TOLD HER MAGDALENA WAS HER SISTER WHEN THEYR LITERALLY SLEEPING WITH EACH OTHER AND HOW CONSTANTA THOUGHT OF ALEXI AS HER SON BUT SLEPT WITH HIM MAKE IT MAKE SENSE 😭😭😭 i liked the ending - perhaps an unpopular opinion but there's just something about non-definitive endings in books like this one that work. also incredibly sapphic and sexy so that's always a bonus.
