About this deal

The rest of the assorted characters Maggie, Jackie, Ozzy, Pat, little Freddie are all such large personalities themselves it makes for a very engaging book that I would highly recommend.

Esperava-se, inclusive, que a ascensão de Jimmy e a queda de Freddie levariam a um clímax de violência e tensão da narrativa, mas o encontro decisivo entre os dois ficou devendo.I would have like certain characters to be introduced, or at least mentioned, earlier in the book, both to balance out the pace and to give more weight to the end of their arcs. The unique style of writing of Cole can be seen in all her novels, as most of them feature a female as the main protagonist or as an antihero. I had high hopes at the beginning as an intruder is injured by a householder protecting his property which is always a controversial topic, but I couldn't stand the gratuitous violence, sexually explicit scenes and shocking language throughout this book.

Her novel The Take was made into a television serial starring Tom Hardy in the lead role as Freddie. Whilst there’s plenty of drama surrounding this revelation it just didn’t seem necessary and never really seemed to go anywhere, it felt like it was just added in again for the nostalgic factor and just to fill the white space that would otherwise have been left. In the later months of the year 2011, an online voting was started by the readers for the best book written by Cole. In the novel’s opening pages, Cole has chosen a quote from Mary Leapor’s An Essay on Woman about how women are treated like shit once they have had their first flush of youth, and are generally seen as weak, and this theme echoes throughout. The Take was serialised on British television on Sky1 in June 2009, which starred Tom Hardy as Freddie.Unfortunately it doesn’t read like your typical crime novel because the actual detective work is shockingly bad. Along with TV executive producer, Barry Ryan, Cole co-owns the film and television production company "2 Queens". Using nearly every character to drum that point in makes me start to wonder if it is all a conspiracy.

On attempting to run away from her miserable life, she is rescued by Desrae who teaches her how to survive in the society of the criminal underworld. The downside is there are far too few opportunities for hope and eventually it becomes a grind, a persistent narrative of drugs, sex and perversion. This is the first novel I have read from Martina cole and I have been looking forward to getting round to her! I enjoyed getting to know some of the characters but I felt like some of them just dropped of the radar during the book and you don’t hear about again. Several of Martina's novels have been adapted for the screen, including The Take and The Runaway which were shown on Sky 1 to remarkable reviews.
