About this deal

There is some debate regarding whether one is better than the other. The BVA says 'there's not enough evidence to recommend one over the other, there are advantages to both. A vet will be able to recommend the most suitable diet.' To find out which are the best and worst cat food brands, in November 2021 we surveyed 3,122 Which? members who'd bought pet food recently and asked about their experiences with their chosen brand.

Dry cat food – or “kibble” – generally tends to be the most convenient and cost-effective way to feed healthy cats. The quality of dry food varies, with cheaper foods tending to have less carefully chosen ingredients, which can make them less palatable for fussy cats, as well as having a poorer long term impact on body condition and overall health. Common symptoms include, lethargy, aggressive or hyperactive behaviour, chronic skin and ear problems, slime and jelly being passed with the stools, and flatulence, bloating and weight gain or loss. There are no definite rules, due to the variation in individual metabolisms between different animals. The best answer is to weigh your pet and start with the mid-range of the amount recommended on the label for that body weight.Though, Justine Shotton, BVA President, does say that diets 'should be adapted to the cat's lifestyle, age, breed and any health conditions.' So it's worth speaking to a vet when you get a new cat. Cat food brands rated by customers Our unique survey reveals how popular cat food brands, including Iams, James Wellbeloved, Royal Canin, Purina One and Whiskas were rated by customers. Available in 85g pouches and 85g tins as mousse, paté, terrine, gravy and jelly - plus sauces and savoury cakes

If you do choose this option, look for a supplier who is a member of UK Petfood ( https://www.ukpetfood.org/), (formerly the Pet Food Manufacturer’s Association) so that you can be sure that certain standards are adhered to. Can I feed my cat on home-prepared food? If you're investing in your pets, we also have guides to the best vacuums for pet hair and the best dog food. Some pets appear to be sensitive or intolerant to certain ingredients and additives and this can cause a variety of problems. First, raw meat often carries bacteria that can cause disease in immunocompromised humans in the household (such as babies, elderly people or anyone on chemotherapy). Second, care needs to be taken to ensure your cat is fed a balanced diet: pure meat alone does not provide enough nutrients.

Food for cats in the prime of life, usually between one and seven years old, will be balanced and nutritionally complete, meeting all of an adult cat’s needs. Dry cat food, also known as kibble or biscuits, can also be highly palatable. One of the main reasons for obesity in cats is the fact that many carers leave a full bowl of cat kibble out continually, using an ad libitum self-feeding routine. The lower moisture level makes dry food cheaper to transport and store, and it’s more convenient and less messy for cat carers. What is the difference between kitten, adult and senior cat foods? To start the transition, introduce the new food as a low proportion of their old – we would recommend a 25% new food to 75% old food ratio - and gradually increase the new-to-old food ratio over ~7 days, until your cat has completely transitioned to the new food. Ensure to monitor your cat’s behaviour and food consumption over this period. Raw pet food has become more popular over the past few years (particularly for dogs), but experts don't generally recommend it, particularly DIY versions. Nutritional needs change as pets grow older. A diet for a growing kitten is very different to one formulated for a fifteen year old elderly cat.
