About this deal

Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. The concept of the expendable is introduced in the very first chapter, and it gets you thinking more and more about the philosophy of life and death as the book goes on. Due to Mickey7's best "friend" reporting him dead when he was just kind of lost, Mickey8 is already up and alive.

Narrated by John Pirhalla and Katharine Chin, the story was brilliantly performed and the personalities of the characters came through in the voicework.Discussing the background of the novel, Ashton said, "I wrote a short story a number of years ago that explored. A history major, he had few marketable skills and the only opening available on the Niflheim expedition was Expendable, a job one only takes willingly if they are crazy or desperate. If that isn't bad enough, or that he chose it as a slightly less bad choice than being broke elsewhere, he's treated like shit by command and his only bright spot is some pretty cool people who stand by him even as he dies, and dies again. This book can be pretty grim in places, despite a healthy dose of both light and dark humour, and the cycler is a particularly shiver-inducing piece of tech, that casts an ominous metaphorical shadow over events.

I teach quantum physics, so I sort of understood most of this stuff, but I had to do some digging to make sure I got the details right. Determined to live, Mickey7 starts to make his way out of the hole and is eventually picked up and carried back to the periphery of his base by one of the creatures known for killing humans. His short fiction has appeared in dozens of venues, ranging from Louisiana Literature to Daily Science Fiction.
